About the Role

The City of St. Catharines is seeking a highly skilled Urban Planner to join our Planning and Building Services team. As a key member of our team, you will play a critical role in shaping the future of our city.

Key Responsibilities
  • Land Use Policy and Zoning
    • Develop and implement land use policies and zoning by-laws to guide urban development and ensure sustainable growth.
    • Conduct research and analysis to inform land use policy decisions and ensure alignment with provincial and regional policies.
    • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to develop and implement land use policies and zoning by-laws.
  • Land Development Review and Approvals
    • Review and process planning applications to ensure compliance with land use policies and zoning by-laws.
    • Conduct public consultations and engage with stakeholders to ensure that community needs are addressed.
    • Prepare and present reports to Council and other stakeholders on land development proposals.
  • Community Improvement Program
    • Administer the Community Improvement Program to provide financial incentives for community development projects.
    • Review and recommend applications for funding to support community development initiatives.
    • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure effective implementation of the Community Improvement Program.
  • General
    • Provide guidance and support to members of the Planning team on land use policy and zoning matters.
    • Stay up-to-date on new legislation, provincial and regional policies, and emerging trends in urban planning.
    • Prepare and present reports and presentations to Council and other stakeholders on land use policy and zoning matters.
Requirements
  • A degree in Urban Planning or a related field from a recognized university.
  • Membership in the Ontario Professional Planning Institute (OPPI) and the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) is an asset.
  • Four years of progressively responsible experience in municipal planning is preferred.
