The Opportunity:
The Grounds Maintenance Technician will be responsible for overseeing various work on the Olds College campus, including grounds maintenance, landscape and maintenance, planting, fertilizing, mowing, and spraying.
Key Job Functions:
- Operate equipment, including snow removal equipment, skid steers, and landscaping equipment, such as sprayers, trailers, trucks, skid steers, lawn mower, etc.
- Provide backup to the Grounds team in terms of day-to-day work scheduling and operations.
- Oversee general ground maintenance, equipment operation, landscape construction/repair, and irrigation repair and maintenance operations on the campus.
- Evaluate tree health for safety of climb. Plan tree trimming.
- Incorporate integrated pest management (IPM) in controlling weeds and other pests.
- Provide day-to-day direction, guidance, and mentor summer students.
- Prepare planting beds, (weeding, mulch, watering) and maintain perennials; prune trees and shrubs.
- Support Waste Management on Campus.
- Ensure that work orders are properly completed.
- Help develop and maintain procedures for equipment and operations.
- Track cost to support budgeting and inventory.
Education/Experience/Skills/Knowledge Required:
- ISA certified Arborist or willing to obtain. Climbing is an asset.
- A diploma in Horticulture, Arboriculture, or related field preferred. A journeyperson certificate would be considered an asset.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of practical experience plus weed/pest control and growing horticulture crops an asset.
- Possess a minimum of a Class 5 Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
- Possess a Pesticide Applicators license on hiring or by probation end.
- Knowledge related to grounds maintenance and specialized grounds equipment.
- Knowledge of environmental/sustainability issues.
- Strong decision-making capabilities.
- Previous experience as a team lead an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse team.
- Average computer skills required.
- Ability to adopt new technology and practices.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Physically fit and the ability to lift up to 50lbs, perform repetitive work, and able to work in diverse weather conditions.
