Main Purpose and Function
The Engineering Services department plays a vital role in fulfilling the City’s mission by delivering essential services and public infrastructure. These services encompass fundamental needs such as water distribution, sewage management, drainage systems, waste collection, street maintenance, and public lighting, alongside regulatory responsibilities including traffic management, parking oversight, transportation strategy, and safeguarding utility and communication pathways.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
The Spare Driver in the Collections unit is tasked with operating Automated/Semi-Automated vehicles for the purpose of collecting curbside refuse and organic waste. Drivers are allocated to predetermined routes across the city and are expected to navigate safely while ensuring high-quality customer service to residents. Responsibilities include exiting the vehicle to tag or retrieve overturned bins and maintaining a courteous and professional demeanor while sharing road space with other vehicles and service providers. In instances where curbside collection is not required, Spare Drivers may be redirected to perform other duties within the Sanitation Services Branch.
The Sanitation Services Branch operates year-round, and candidates must be prepared to work shifts as needed. The standard Collections shift runs from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday. Training sessions may occur on weekends, and successful candidates must demonstrate availability that aligns with the Branch's operational needs to maintain employment.
A functional and/or physical assessment related to the essential job functions may be necessary.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Completion of high school education along with some experience in labor and truck operation.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Previous experience in waste collection is preferred. Familiarity with collection and recycling processes is advantageous. Understanding of safe operational procedures. Comprehensive knowledge of tools, materials, and equipment utilized in the role. Awareness of the functions of the relevant branch and established practices for executing tasks. Ability to exercise independent judgment and action in routine or straightforward aspects of the job. Proficiency in addressing inquiries and engaging respectfully with the public. Competence in operating a variety of tools and equipment. Adequate physical strength, endurance, and coordination to perform demanding physical tasks. Capability to lift, push, and pull heavy items. Ability to walk or stand for extended periods with frequent bending or twisting motions. Capacity to work near moving machinery and in high-traffic environments. Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions and on uneven terrain. Proficiency in using a diverse range of tools and equipment.Driver's License and Record Checks:
A valid Class 3 BC Driver's License with Air Brakes or higher, along with a satisfactory National Safety Code driving record. Candidates with unsatisfactory driving records will undergo a more detailed review.
