Position Overview

The University of Waterloo is home to Velocity, an innovative and fast-paced initiative designed to cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset among students and alumni, transforming them into successful innovators and startup leaders. The Director of Entrepreneurial Development will play a pivotal role in providing ongoing training and support to new founders who have completed the Velocity campus programs. This position is essential for nurturing founders who are dedicated to their entrepreneurial journeys, enabling them to progress rapidly through tailored programming, events, and resources.

The incumbent will oversee the Founder program, collaborating with advisory leads, event coordinators, communications teams, operations staff, and the executive leadership to ensure that Velocity founders receive the necessary support to thrive. This program is crucial in guiding entrepreneurs through the vital initial six months of their business ventures. The Director will focus on enhancing entrepreneurial skills, expanding the founder network, and managing the selection, onboarding, and offboarding processes for program participants. The goal is to establish a premier program dedicated to fostering entrepreneurial talent.

Key Responsibilities

Management of the Founder Program

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive strategy and roadmap for entrepreneurship initiatives, ensuring alignment with the organization's goals.
  • Design and facilitate a variety of activities and services tailored to support entrepreneurs at different stages of their development.
  • Oversee the selection, onboarding, evaluation, and graduation processes for founders within the program.
  • Collaborate with the advisory team to identify and recruit mentors, advisors, and industry experts to provide guidance and support to participants.
  • Establish partnerships with external organizations to enhance the program's resources and network.
  • Work with facilities management to ensure that the incubator's environment is conducive to the success of entrepreneurs and startups.
  • Assess program effectiveness through metrics, feedback, and performance indicators, continuously refining offerings for improvement.
  • Foster a vibrant and inclusive community of entrepreneurs and stakeholders through networking events and collaborative opportunities.
  • Provide personalized support, coaching, and mentorship to participants, assisting them in overcoming challenges and achieving their goals.
  • Act as a representative and advocate for the entrepreneurship incubator at various events and industry forums.
Qualifications
  • A university degree or a comparable combination of education and experience.
  • At least five years of experience as a founder of a startup that has successfully raised funding and progressed through various funding phases.
  • A thorough understanding of the entrepreneurial ecosystem, including the startup lifecycle and the challenges faced by early-stage ventures.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to plan and execute multiple initiatives concurrently.
  • Experience in collaborating across diverse groups to advance a shared vision.
  • Proven ability to work with varied teams and stakeholders, including entrepreneurs, investors, and mentors.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with a talent for building relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • A solid understanding of the entrepreneurial mindset, coupled with a passion for innovation and making a positive impact.
  • Knowledge of best practices in entrepreneurship education, mentorship, and community engagement.
