Position Overview

Laboratory Geneticist
The Laboratory Geneticist collaborates closely with the Lead Laboratory Geneticist and operates under the guidance of the Chief of Pathology and the Medical Director of Laboratory Medicine. This role requires effective collaboration with the Genetics Team, which includes the Laboratory Manager, Technical Coordinators, Medical Geneticists, and Pathologists. Our laboratories provide a comprehensive array of tests, ranging from prenatal diagnostics to adult disease assessments and cancer genetics. The ideal candidate will possess expertise in analyzing and interpreting results from various genetic methodologies, including but not limited to NGS, SNP array, chromosome analysis, and FISH. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work seamlessly within an interdisciplinary team are essential. You will also demonstrate a solid understanding of educational principles to support the professional growth of colleagues. Prioritizing tasks and multitasking effectively while maintaining professionalism and organization is crucial. You will share the responsibility of ensuring adherence to health and safety policies, creating a safe environment for patients, staff, physicians, volunteers, and families.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the technical operations of the Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics Laboratories.
  • Engage in the development and implementation of new tests and technologies.
  • Provide thorough and precise review, interpretation, and reporting of genetic testing results.
  • Serve as a consultant for molecular and cytogenetic testing to physicians and healthcare providers.
  • Foster effective communication between Laboratory services, Clinical Genetics, and other internal stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the education of students, fellows, and staff.
  • Participate in relevant internal and external committees.
  • Monitor quality management and improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the Quality Team to ensure compliance with Accreditation Canada Diagnostics standards.

Qualifications

  • PhD in genetics or related fields, or MD.
  • Certification or eligibility for certification in Molecular Genetics and Cytogenetics by the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists or the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics.
