Qualifications: Education, Training, and Experience

A Bachelor's Degree in a health-related field from an accredited post-secondary institution is required.

Completion of recognized post-basic education pertaining to mental health issues and/or substance use disorders; a minimum of two (2) years of recent relevant experience; a comprehensive understanding of mental health and substance use challenges; proficiency in conducting substance misuse assessments, applying treatment methodologies, implementing intervention strategies, navigating the change process, and understanding community dynamics.

Familiarity with relevant legislation, including Mental Health and Child Protection laws. Awareness of available programs and services, their interconnections, and their roles in community service delivery. Alternatively, an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

A valid BC Driver's License is mandatory.

Skills and Abilities
  • Proven competence in treating addiction and mental health issues in alignment with Island Health's framework and standards, focusing on rehabilitation/recovery and harm-reduction models;
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written;
  • Strong interpersonal abilities;
  • Demonstrated organizational, problem-solving, and instructional skills;
  • Sound judgment, keen observational skills, and client assessment capabilities, along with tact and empathy when working with clients facing addiction;
  • Ability to collaborate effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team;
  • Commitment to promoting positive change and fostering independence;
  • Strong prioritization and workload organization skills;
  • Capability to fulfill the responsibilities of the position;
  • Proficiency in operating a personal computer with various Windows-based software;
  • Ability to cultivate positive public relations;
  • Competence in operating related equipment.
