Physician - Mental Health and Substance Use Specialist

This is an exciting opportunity for Physicians to provide care for individuals with mental health and substance use concerns in a collaborative setting. Working alongside a supervising Psychiatrist, you will conduct patient assessments, develop diagnoses, and create treatment plans. Your work will be instrumental in reducing the waitlist for Psychiatry and enabling patients to receive timely care.
The GP Psych service is operated through Island Health, Mental Health and Substance Use, with funding and supports from the Nanaimo Primary Care Network. You will have the opportunity to work with a supportive team and utilize Cerner, the Electronic Medical Record, to support patient care.
As a GP Psych Physician, you will be responsible for developing and managing your schedule, with contracted shifts for direct and indirect patient care expected to overlap with the Psychiatrist's availability. There are no after-hours or on-call expectations, and no patient attachment expectations in this service.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct patient assessments and develop diagnoses in collaboration with the supervising Psychiatrist
- Create treatment plans and generate consultation reports for referring primary care providers
- Work collaboratively with the Psychiatry team to provide mental health services to patients in Nanaimo
- Develop and manage your schedule, with contracted shifts for direct and indirect patient care
This opportunity is ideal for Physicians with an interest in providing care for those with mental health and substance use concerns. Additional MHSU training is not required, but additional training or experience is an asset.
You will be working in a collaborative environment, and a consultation report is generated to be sent back to the referring primary care provider.
This supportive role has significantly reduced the waitlist for Psychiatry and allowed patients with more urgent/severe conditions to be seen by a psychiatrist in a timely manner.
The GP Psych service is operated through Island Health, Mental Health and Substance Use with funding and supports from the Nanaimo Primary Care Network.
