Role Responsibilities

The Government of Alberta is seeking qualified lawyers to serve as Justices of the Peace in various locations across the province. This is an exciting opportunity for individuals who wish to contribute to the administration of justice and serve the community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Administer oaths and take affidavits
  • Conduct preliminary inquiries and hearings
  • Make decisions on bail and other matters
  • Perform other duties as required by the Alberta Court of Justice

Requirements:

  • Be a Canadian citizen and a member in good standing of the Law Society of Alberta
  • Have a minimum of five years of related experience at the Bar
  • Be able to demonstrate integrity, professional excellence, community and social awareness, cultural sensitivity, and personal suitability

Restrictions on Other Employment:

Successful applicants will not be able to practice law, appear as counsel on any matters in the Alberta Court of Justice, or represent any client in any proceeding involving the Government of Alberta or the Government of Canada.

Notes:

  • Shift work is a requirement of these positions
  • Interview and relocation expenses will not be granted
  • This competition will be used to fill current and future vacancies
