Job Summary
The Government of Alberta is seeking qualified lawyers to serve as full-time or part-time Justices of the Peace. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the administration of justice in Alberta.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer oaths and affirmations
- Take evidence and statements
- Conduct preliminary inquiries and hearings
- Make decisions on bail and other matters
- Perform other duties as required by the Alberta Court of Justice
Requirements
- Be a Canadian citizen
- Be a member in good standing of the Law Society of Alberta
- Have a minimum of five years of related experience at the Bar
- Undergo a screening process and be recommended for appointment by the Judicial Council and the Alberta Judicial Nominating Committee

Restrictions on Other Employment
- Full-time applicants will not be able to practice law
- Part-time applicants will not be able to practice criminal law or family law, appear as counsel on any matters in the Alberta Court of Justice, represent any client in any proceeding involving the Government of Alberta or the Government of Canada, or represent the Government of Alberta or the Government of Canada in any proceeding

- Shift work is a requirement of these positions
