Position Overview

The Facility Maintenance Specialist plays a crucial role in supporting the Chief Engineer with comprehensive facility upkeep. This includes managing the preparation and maintenance of the ice surface, overseeing automated building controls, and ensuring the functionality of HVAC and electrical systems. The responsibilities encompass a wide range of tasks such as machinery repairs, executing preventive maintenance for HVAC and boiler systems, and addressing general equipment issues including plumbing, electrical, and refrigeration systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance and repairs on HVAC, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, chillers, refrigeration, boilers, and related equipment.
  • Maintain accurate records of labor hours, materials utilized, and completed work.
  • Conduct all corrective and preventive maintenance tasks associated with HVAC and building systems.
  • Execute duties safely in accordance with established Facility Procedures and Occupational Health & Safety Regulations.
  • Utilize Windows-based computer systems and demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office, Micromain, and Reliable Controls.
  • Supervise part-time staff and oversee their assigned responsibilities.
  • Respond promptly to emergency situations including fire, evacuations, equipment failures, and customer inquiries.
  • Adhere to departmental policies regarding the safe handling and disposal of hazardous materials while maintaining a clean work environment.
  • Ensure adequate inventory of tools and supplies, including preparing purchase orders and conducting periodic supply checks.
  • Assist the operations department with event preparations and requirements.
  • Complete daily checklists and safety inspection reports for equipment.
  • Engage in arena maintenance tasks such as painting, drywall repairs, and cleaning of outdoor areas.
  • Collaborate effectively as part of a team.
  • Fulfill additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of one year of relevant work experience.
  • Possession of a 5th Class Power Engineer ticket with Refrigeration Endorsement, Refrigeration Operator ticket, or 4th Class Power Engineering or higher.
  • Experience in building maintenance, particularly with HVAC and related systems.
  • Familiarity with direct digital controls and variable frequency drives is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of boilers, chillers, and refrigeration systems is essential.
  • Experience with large, water-cooled chiller systems, ice machines, water filtration, and gas-fired equipment is required.
  • A valid driver's license is necessary.
  • Strong communication skills are a must.
  • Attention to detail and excellent organizational abilities are essential.
  • Flexibility to work varied schedules including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Valid WHMIS certification or willingness to obtain within the first three months of employment.
  • Valid First Aid certification, CPR, and AED training or willingness to obtain within the first three months of employment.
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs and work from heights, with experience using hand and power tools.
  • Capability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Proven track record of delivering excellent customer service.
  • Ability to operate an ice resurfacer (Zamboni) and maintain arena ice.
  • Desirable knowledge of operational equipment including staging, audiovisual, lighting, truss, rigging, and small tools.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

This position requires frequent standing and walking for extended periods, climbing stairs and ladders, and using hands for various tasks. Employees may occasionally lift and move items up to 40 lbs. The work environment includes both indoor and outdoor settings, with noise levels typically ranging from moderate to loud.
