Position Overview

The Facility Operator plays a crucial role in supporting the Chief Engineer with comprehensive facility upkeep. This includes managing the preparation and ongoing maintenance of the ice surface, as well as overseeing automated building controls, HVAC systems, electrical systems, and general repairs throughout the facility.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct maintenance and repairs on HVAC, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, chillers, refrigeration, boilers, and related equipment.
  • Maintain accurate records of labor hours, materials utilized, and tasks completed.
  • Execute all corrective and preventive maintenance tasks related to HVAC and building systems.
  • Perform duties in compliance with established Facility Procedures, Occupational Health & Safety Rules, and other relevant regulations.
  • Utilize Windows-based computer systems effectively, including proficiency in Microsoft Office, Micromain, and Reliable Controls.
  • Supervise part-time staff and oversee their assigned tasks.
  • Respond promptly to emergency situations, including fire alarms, evacuations, equipment failures, and customer inquiries.
  • Adhere to departmental policies regarding the safe handling and disposal of hazardous materials, ensuring a clean and safe work environment.
  • Manage the inventory of tools and supplies, including preparing purchase orders and conducting regular stock checks.
  • Assist the operations team with event preparations and requirements.
  • Complete daily checklists and safety inspection reports for equipment.
  • Perform maintenance tasks such as painting, drywall repairs, and general cleaning of the facility.
  • Collaborate effectively within a team setting.
  • Fulfill additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of one year of relevant work experience.
  • Possession of a 5th Class Power Engineer ticket with Refrigeration Endorsement, Refrigeration Operator ticket, or 4th Class Power Engineering or higher.
  • Experience in building maintenance, particularly with HVAC and related systems.
  • Familiarity with direct digital controls and variable frequency drives is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of boiler, chiller, and refrigeration systems is essential.
  • Experience with large, water-cooled chiller systems, ice machines, water filtration, and gas-fired equipment is required.
  • A valid driver's license is necessary.
  • Strong communication skills are essential.
  • Attention to detail and excellent organizational skills are required.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Flexibility to work varied hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must possess a valid WHMIS ticket or be willing to obtain one within the first three months of employment.
  • Must have a valid First Aid ticket, trained in CPR and AED, or be willing to obtain certification within the first three months of employment.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs and work from heights, including climbing ladders.
  • Capability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Proven track record of excellent customer service.
  • Experience operating an ice resurfacer (Zamboni) and maintaining arena ice is preferred.
  • Familiarity with operational equipment such as staging, audiovisual tools, lighting, and small equipment is a plus.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

This position requires frequent standing and walking for extended periods, climbing stairs and ladders, and using hands for various tasks. Employees may occasionally lift and move items weighing up to 40 lbs. The work environment includes both indoor and outdoor settings, with noise levels typically ranging from moderate to loud.
