The Role:

Under the general supervision of the Maintenance Manager, this position is responsible for the design, development, implementation, and assessment of both formal and informal training programs within the Maintenance Department. Additionally, the role involves coordinating with external training providers for all maintenance personnel. There may be occasional support for training initiatives in other departments. Responsibilities also include maintaining and updating the department's technical documentation and preventive maintenance programs. The Maintenance Training Specialist will frequently engage in research and provide recommendations on technical matters, as well as conduct on-the-job training and mentorship for junior mechanics and apprentices. Flexibility in working hours and shifts may be required to meet training needs.

Main Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct ongoing assessments to identify training needs for maintenance personnel, including mandatory safety and compliance training.
  2. Design, develop, implement, and evaluate both formal and informal training programs.
  3. Coordinate and support third-party training providers, including scheduling and resource allocation.
  4. Maintain accurate records of all training activities, both vendor-provided and in-house.
  5. Update and manage the department's technical publication libraries, both electronic and hardcopy.
  6. Deliver impromptu training sessions for junior mechanics and apprentices.
  7. Investigate technical issues and propose corrective actions.
  8. Certify documentation of ongoing and completed work, including time reports and maintenance records.
  9. Monitor workplace practices to ensure adherence to safety protocols.
  10. Evaluate training program effectiveness in terms of quality control and productivity.
  11. Assist in developing technical specifications for new equipment and materials.
  12. Support forecasting of future maintenance needs based on analysis of trends and failures.
  13. Enforce departmental regulations and safety practices.
  14. Foster effective working relationships with colleagues, vendors, and other stakeholders.
  15. Perform additional related duties as required.
  16. Maintain consistent attendance and performance standards.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge:
    • Understanding of maintenance principles, methods, tools, and materials used in industrial facilities.
    • Familiarity with occupational health and safety regulations.
    • Experience with CMMS systems (e.g., SAP).
    • Awareness of plant policies and labor agreements.
  • Skills:
    • Effective verbal and written communication abilities.
    • Proficiency in instructional methods and techniques.
    • Ability to interpret and apply complex technical instructions.
    • Competence in writing memos and reports to support operations.
    • Strong problem-solving skills.
    • Familiarity with basic office technologies (e.g., spreadsheets, word processing).
    • Basic leadership and motivational skills.
    • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and assertiveness.
  • Minimum Qualifications:
    • Completion of a four-year journey-level apprenticeship, five years of journey-level mechanic experience, and two years of experience in training others, or an equivalent combination of training and supervisory experience.

Physical Requirements: Ability to frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds, work in various weather conditions, and operate in environments with fumes, odors, and dust, while adhering to safety protocols.
