About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Court Officer to join our team at The Government of Nova Scotia. As a Court Officer, you will play a critical role in supporting the Judiciary and ensuring the smooth operation of our court system.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and manage court hearings at all levels of court, ensuring timely and efficient proceedings.
  • Provide confidential administrative and organizational support to the Judiciary, including preparing complex orders and decisions.
  • Act as the clerk in all courts, including jury sittings, and perform quasi-judicial duties as a Staff Justice of the Peace.
  • Train and mentor new staff in day-to-day operational activities, ensuring a high level of knowledge and expertise.
  • Record and transcribe court proceedings, using electronic recording equipment to ensure accuracy and efficiency.
  • Facilitate all aspects of court hearings, including opening court, calling cases, and operating technology to support virtual or hybrid court models.
  • Exercise care and control of exhibits, ensuring their safe transportation and storage.
Requirements
  • Two years of post-secondary education in a related discipline, plus five years of related experience in a legal environment.
  • Equivalent combination of training and experience, with exposure to the justice system.
  • Excellent keyboarding, data entry, and transcribing skills, with proficiency in MS Office products and virtual platforms.
  • Superior organizational abilities, strong prioritization skills, and attention to detail, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to handle difficult situations and maintain confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of the Rules and Statutes that govern the courts, as well as a sound working knowledge of legal documents, forms, and court procedures.
