Role Overview
The Funeral Director is responsible for managing various tasks throughout the preparation, planning, and execution of funeral and memorial services, ensuring that operations run seamlessly and that client families' expectations are not only met but exceeded.
Key Responsibilities
- Engage with client families or their legal representatives to design services that align with their memorialization wishes.
- Present all available merchandising and service options to client families.
- Gather necessary information to complete essential documents such as obituaries, death certificates, and burial permits.
- Coordinate all service arrangements with clergy, military organizations, and other participants involved in the funeral service.
- Utilize systems to document merchandise selections, finalize contracts, and complete required forms.
- Plan, schedule, and oversee visitations and services.
- Supervise all staff involved in services, ensuring that each team member understands their role and represents the organization professionally.
- Prepare the deceased, including dressing and casketing.
- Set up visitation areas according to client family preferences, including lighting and floral arrangements.
- Guide families and attendees to and from the funeral service location.
- Manage transportation logistics for client families to ensure timely arrivals and departures.
- Coordinate the shipment of remains to and from various locations.
- Mentor and oversee the work of Apprentice Funeral Directors regarding services and documentation.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Active Funeral Director's license in good standing.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Excellent listening, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational abilities and attention to detail.
- Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and funeral service software.
- Background check required for successful candidates.
Additional Qualifications
- Fluency in English; bilingual candidates are a plus.
- High level of computer proficiency.
- Ability to effectively present information to families, colleagues, and leadership.
- Willingness to engage in community-based organizations to enhance market presence.
- Empathy towards grieving families and the ability to handle sensitive situations with tact.
- Maintain a positive work environment through effective organization and communication.
- Ability to actively listen to the needs of client families.
- Attention to detail and ability to work collaboratively in a team setting.
- Professional demeanor when addressing complaints or service dissatisfaction.
- Capability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Supervisory Duties
This role may involve supervising Funeral Directors in training.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
The physical demands of this position include:
- Primarily indoor office work, with some outdoor responsibilities.
- Outdoor tasks may involve exposure to various weather conditions and environments.
- Equipment utilized includes computers, fax machines, copiers, multi-line phone systems, and transportation devices.
- Must possess sufficient strength and dexterity to perform essential functions safely.
- Regularly required to lift up to 75 pounds, with occasional lifting of up to 100 pounds.
- Duties may require climbing, sitting, standing, bending, and kneeling.
- Exposure to chemicals and potential biohazards is considered high risk.
- Must be able to drive a company vehicle and maintain insurability under company policies.
- Overtime may be necessary.
Travel Requirements
- This position may involve up to 10% travel, primarily local during business hours.
