Program Overview

The Language Assessment and Referral Centre (LARC) operates under the auspices of the International Women of Saskatoon (IWS) and is funded by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

Key Responsibilities

  1. Conduct eligibility screenings for federally funded language initiatives.
  2. Administer complimentary assessments to evaluate clients' current language capabilities.
  3. Present clients with information regarding federal language training (LINC) options.
  4. Utilize standardized assessment tools to evaluate language proficiency in accordance with established guidelines and organizational policies.
  5. Perform screenings for literacy clients using approved methodologies.
  6. Prepare testing environments, ensuring all necessary materials and equipment are ready for assessments.
  7. Deliver exceptional client service and foster a welcoming atmosphere during testing.
  8. Communicate relevant client needs to the LARC team to enhance client success and program improvement.
  9. On a typical workday, conduct a minimum of six new assessments while remaining adaptable to client needs.
  10. Collaborate with fellow assessors to validate and agree on language benchmarks across all skill levels.
  11. Provide constructive feedback to clients regarding their English language proficiency.
  12. Employ various methods to administer assessments, including both in-person and remote options.
  13. Compile Assessment Reports, ensuring secure storage of all test materials in compliance with organizational policies.
  14. Safeguard the privacy and confidentiality of client information and testing materials.
  15. Ensure adequate supplies of testing materials are available for assessment days.
  16. Report any security or confidentiality breaches to management promptly.
  17. Work in partnership with the Head Assessor as the liaison for assessment-related inquiries.
  18. Engage in mandatory training sessions, professional development, and team meetings.
  19. Maintain necessary professional certifications and standards for ESL/EAL teaching and assessment.
  20. Be prepared to cover for absent assessors as needed.
  21. Perform additional duties as assigned by the LARC Saskatchewan Program Manager to achieve program objectives.

Qualifications

Education

  • University degree in Linguistics, Modern Languages, or English.
  • Completion of a recognized TESL training program with a minimum of 250 hours and practicum: TESL Canada Level II Certification.

Experience

  • Minimum of 300 hours teaching ESL to adults.
  • Experience with LINC and/or Stage 1/2 is advantageous.
  • Background in the immigrant, refugee, settlement, and integration sectors is beneficial.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Familiarity with CLB and participation in related workshops.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Awareness of multicultural issues and sensitivity.
  • Proficient interviewing and decision-making skills.
  • Experience in ESL assessment processes.
  • Strong command of English, both oral and written.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work under pressure independently and collaboratively.
  • Excellent customer service and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Proficient in MS Office and relevant client management systems.
  • Positive demeanor and enthusiastic approach.
  • Understanding of challenges faced by immigrant and refugee communities.
