Position Overview:

We are in search of an Economist to join the dynamic team at our innovative Business Data Lab (BDL), which has rapidly become a vital source of intelligence regarding Canadian businesses.


Key Responsibilities:
  1. Develop and maintain economic monitoring tools and forecasting models to support the prediction of key economic indicators for the Canadian economy, including GDP, inflation, employment, and retail sales.
  2. Analyze data from diverse sources, such as Statistics Canada, high-frequency economic indicators, business surveys, and proprietary datasets from the BDL.
  3. Conduct in-depth economic research and analysis on topics pertinent to Canadian businesses, encompassing business conditions, market trends, and economic policies.
  4. Collaborate with data scientists, researchers, and fellow economists to generate actionable insights and forecasts.
  5. Enhance and maintain BDL data tools, including the Business Conditions Terminal and Local Spending Tracker.
  6. Support the dissemination of BDL research findings through various mediums, including reports, blogs, infographics, and social media.
  7. Contribute to the production of bilingual public quarterly reports leveraging data from the Canadian Survey on Business Conditions (CSBC).
  8. Produce high-quality, timely written analyses and commentaries for recurrent macroeconomic and business data releases.
  9. Provide ad hoc economic analysis to support the BDL and Chief Economist's presentations and events.

Qualifications:

A Bachelor's degree in Economics or a related field such as International Business, Finance, Commerce, or Public Policy is required.

Applicants should possess a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience, showcasing strong analytical skills and proficiency in statistical software and data visualization tools (e.g., R, Python, Microsoft Azure, Power BI, STATA, SPSS, EViews, Haver, Excel/Visual Basic macros).

Experience in forecasting economic variables, handling large datasets, and conducting empirical research is essential.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills are necessary, with the ability to present complex data and insights in a clear and concise manner.

Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the capacity to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment while meeting deadlines are critical.

A keen interest in Canadian business and public policy issues, along with an innovative mindset to develop new insights and apply novel analytical approaches, is highly valued.


Asset Qualifications:
  • A graduate degree (Master's or PhD) in Economics or a related discipline.
  • Proficiency in both English and French.
  • Experience in mapping and geo-spatial analysis to derive location-specific insights.
