Hamilton, Ontario, Canada ArcelorMittal Full time

Requisition ID: 30777

Are you interested in contributing to one of Canada's Top 100 Employers? We are in search of individuals who are committed to excellence and eager to work with cutting-edge technology to shape the materials that will define the future.

At ArcelorMittal Dofasco, we are integral to North America's advanced manufacturing supply chain, collaborating with leading automotive, energy, packaging, and construction brands to produce lighter, stronger, and more sustainable steel products – from cans to vehicles.

We are pioneering a transformation in the steel industry aimed at significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the near term, with a goal of achieving net zero by 2050. Our site will be the first integrated steelmaking facility globally to undergo this transition, set to be completed by 2028. Our global organization is at the forefront of substantial decarbonization initiatives across North America and Europe, with our location playing a crucial role in this strategy.

As Hamilton's largest private sector employer, ArcelorMittal Dofasco boasts over 4,500 employees and ships 4.5 million net tons of high-quality flat carbon steel each year. Our motto, "Our Product is Steel. Our Strength is People," reflects our belief that our workforce is our greatest asset.

Role Overview:

We are experiencing rapid evolution and are seeking candidates with a background in engineering and technology, coupled with a passion for advanced manufacturing.

The onboarding process for Process Engineering Coordinators emphasizes learning, exploration, and integration with our Manufacturing Teams. In the initial year, employees will participate in a series of job rotations that provide hands-on experience in Operations, Maintenance, and Technology.

Throughout this journey, you will have the opportunity to shape your career by engaging in daily production and maintenance tasks, managing projects, assisting in troubleshooting, addressing complex challenges, and gaining a comprehensive understanding of our advanced manufacturing facility. These rotations will not only familiarize you with the business but also facilitate the development of relationships with key stakeholders. You will receive both professional and technical mentoring, equipping you with the necessary skills for success.

What is Manufacturing Technology?

The Manufacturing Technology division is responsible for the development and enhancement of work processes and systems that maintain ArcelorMittal Dofasco's leadership in the North American Steel Industry. Here, you will be actively involved in one of the ten distinct steel processing and service business units, focusing on Process Engineering, Asset Engineering, or Product Quality.

The Process Engineering team plays a vital role in manufacturing operations, requiring the extensive application of Continuous Improvement methodologies. You will monitor production and product losses and devise innovative strategies to minimize these losses in collaboration with our Operations and Maintenance teams. Your responsibilities will include developing and optimizing process models for various steel processing operations, leading failure analysis investigations, and implementing projects aimed at enhancing quality and reliability.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Identify, lead, and manage process improvement initiatives while conducting quantitative analyses of process effectiveness using Lean/Six Sigma tools to demonstrate enhanced performance.
  • Participate in troubleshooting and resolving process and equipment issues.
  • Evaluate process and product failures through formal Root Cause Analysis and develop appropriate corrective actions, controls, and training to mitigate failures.
  • Engage in cross-functional teams to ensure product and process quality as challenges arise.
  • Analyze process and product performance, providing recommendations for improvement to leadership.
  • Plan and execute improvement projects as part of the annual business planning process.
  • Maintain FMEA and control plan documentation for manufacturing assets.
  • Develop and monitor Process Health metrics, defining reaction thresholds.
  • Stay informed about new developments in processes, products, equipment, and technologies related to steel manufacturing and processing.
  • Contribute to the development of risk mitigation tools such as FMEA and Control Plans in compliance with IATF 16949 requirements.
  • Conduct layered process audits to ensure adherence to existing processes and identify continuous improvement opportunities.

Qualifications:

  • A 4-year University Degree or a 3-year Engineering Technologist College Diploma.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Experience in manufacturing or the steel industry.
  • General knowledge and experience in manufacturing, maintenance, and equipment.
  • Understanding of sheet steel manufacturing processes.
  • Experience in project management related to process or quality initiatives.
  • Familiarity with World Class Manufacturing (WCM) or World Class Continuous Improvement activities (Lean Manufacturing).
  • Working knowledge of formal Root Cause Analysis (RCA).
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis techniques and software tools (Minitab, R, Excel).
  • Understanding of process (mechanical, chemical) failure mechanisms and modes.
  • Mechanical aptitude and a hands-on approach to problem-solving.
  • Knowledge of Process Reliability concepts and practices.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and troubleshooting abilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the capacity to build strong relationships within a diverse workforce.
  • Ability to influence and lead others.
  • Familiarity with Quality Assurance Methodologies.

Work Environment:

This role involves working in both manufacturing plant and office environments as necessary. Personal safety equipment is required while in the plant, where exposure to dust, chemicals, temperature variations, noise, and large industrial equipment is common.

Job Rotation:

In addition to regular responsibilities, employees will participate in a job rotation program with Operations and Maintenance teams during the first year. This will involve working 12-hour continental shifts (days and nights).

Hours of Work:

The standard hours for this position are daytime hours, Monday to Friday. Extended hours may be necessary to meet project deadlines and shutdowns, as ArcelorMittal Dofasco operates as a 24/7 facility.

Total Rewards:

  • We offer a competitive total compensation package, ensuring superior pay for superior performance, along with comprehensive health and wellness benefits, pension plans, vacation, and related programs.
  • Competitive hourly rates and shift premiums.
  • Eligibility for a quarterly bonus based on company performance against key goals, with a target of 10% of base salary.
  • Company-paid Defined Contribution Pension Plan with employer contributions ranging from 5% to 10%.
  • Generous vacation allowances.
  • Group Benefits with no premiums for health and dental coverage.

After two years of permanent service, employees will participate in a Profit Sharing program, where all permanent employees share equally in the allocation of profits.

Additional Benefits:

  • Competitive vacation entitlements.
  • Provision of PPE and workwear at no cost (if required).
  • Access to Wellness and Employee Assistance Programs.
  • Free access to three onsite fitness centers and a 70-acre recreation park with multiple arenas, fields, and organized sports for employees and their families.

We appreciate all applicants in advance; however, only those selected for an online assessment will be contacted.

ArcelorMittal Dofasco is an equal opportunity employer, encouraging all qualified candidates to apply. We are committed to providing accommodations for individuals with disabilities to support their participation in all aspects of the recruitment and selection process.
