About the Role
We are seeking a skilled Engineering Manager to become a vital part of our expanding Privacy Engineering division within the Security Engineering framework. The Engineering Manager will play a crucial role in advancing our privacy capabilities, which encompass managing access requests, processing data deletions, and safeguarding sensitive information, including personally identifiable information (PII). This role involves leading the Privacy Engineering team, dedicated to delivering robust privacy features by establishing effective controls and defenses, while also branching into a Data Security Platform initiative. Your dedication to integrating secure privacy solutions into business and technological challenges will position you as a trusted advisor to your colleagues and their teams. You will oversee projects and shape our strategic direction, making a significant impact on the organization.
About the Team
The Privacy Engineering team operates as a platform group within the Security Engineering organization, committed to facilitating the development of products that prioritize user privacy. We manage our internal data privacy architecture, which includes systems for annotating, locating, and deleting data across both production and offline storage environments. Additionally, we create front-end components that various product teams utilize to provide users with direct access to these internal systems.
Our Privacy team collaborates closely with our core Privacy working group, which includes members from our Legal, Compliance, and Operations teams, as well as privacy partners from each of our primary product sectors. We also work in tandem with our Infrastructure, Data Platform, and Security engineering teams to ensure that privacy controls are effectively implemented at all levels of our technology stack.
About the Job- Cultivate, mentor, and lead a diverse team of experienced software engineers, systems engineers, and security engineers across all facets of Security and Privacy.
- Provide guidance to executive and senior technical leadership regarding Instacart's vision for privacy and security through consistent written and verbal communication.
- Direct the Privacy Engineering collaboration with infrastructure and application teams to ensure that all products are designed and delivered with a focus on security through Privacy by Design principles.
- Establish policies and procedures that safeguard our customer and partner data.
- Develop and present metrics and reports to senior leadership concerning the top privacy and security risks and the overall health of their respective areas.
Minimum Qualifications
- 7+ years of professional experience in software engineering, privacy engineering, or security engineering, delivering comprehensive Privacy Engineering solutions.
- 2+ years of leadership experience managing a team of 5 or more senior-level contributors, with the ability to recruit, develop, and scale teams effectively.
- Strong knowledge of distributed systems and cloud technologies OR application security technologies OR infrastructure security technologies.
- Capability to evaluate cost/benefit trade-offs of privacy and security initiatives within the context of overall business risk management and operational objectives.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's and/or Master's Degree in Computer Science or related fields (Mathematics, Engineering, etc.).
- An inspiring and effective leader in a dynamic environment, demonstrating adaptability.
- Practical experience with regulations such as GDPR, CCPA, CPRA, etc.
- Proven experience implementing privacy, trust, and security measures that have been integrated into consumer products and/or services.
