The Opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Director of Building Asset and Energy Management to join our team. Reporting to the Managing Director, this key role will provide data-driven leadership and management of the Asset Management Department, offering related supports and services to member housing providers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Implement and update the Operational Plan for Asset Management Department activities, aligning with BCNPHA's Strategic Plan and other organizational activities.
  • Staff management, coaching, mentoring, and guidance for direct reports.
  • Compliance with requirements of all existing funding.
  • Ongoing management and analysis of asset data to inform strategic priorities, support department activities, or business areas.
  • Establishing department goals and expectations, procedures, and systems to optimize intake and execution of projects and initiatives across and through teams, ensuring consistency with team capacity and mission.
Energy Management
  • Investigate, develop, and implement energy efficiency programs, including securing project funding from various utility and government partners.
  • Ensure that Senior Managers are developed to provide coaching and training to both staff and non-profit housing providers directly to identify, create business cases, secure funding for, and implement energy efficiency projects.
  • Ensure that Senior Managers provide detailed technical support to non-profit housing providers to identify, plan, and implement energy efficiency projects, and incorporate energy efficiency features into capital projects and new construction projects.
  • Seek funding to grow the team and for our strategic partners to secure additional funds for energy and capital projects on behalf of non-profit housing societies.
  • Provide strategic leadership in coordinating and overseeing the activities and technical deliverables of consultants engaged by BCNPHA's Energy Management Department and/or non-profit organizations.
Capital Planning
  • Analyze and report on trends on asset condition and liabilities in non-profit housing portfolio to inform BCNPHA partnership programs, funding priorities, and other BCNPHA activities.
  • Evaluate need and demand for new or expanded BCNPHA capital planning and portfolio planning supports to non-profit housing providers.
Program and Partnership Development and Overall Management
  • Act as a point of contact with internal and external partners on strategic issues affecting and supporting energy and asset management activities for non-profit housing societies across the province.
  • Ongoing management of relationships with external partners, including all funders.
  • Ongoing oversight and management of new and existing partnership programs (i.e., asbestos inventory and management program, HVAC procurement program, etc.).
  • Development of new partnership programs as determined by careful analysis of market demand and opportunity.
Capacity Building
  • Oversee preparation of and delivery of presentations, educational materials, and program updates to non-profit societies and partners.
  • Provide leadership and contributions to BCNPHA education curriculum related to facilities, capital planning, operations and maintenance, and energy management.
  • Contribute to all organization communications and capacity building activities, including BCNPHA publications, annual conference, RENT events, etc.
Essential Qualities and Experience

The ideal candidate will be a strategic, systems-thinking, and data-driven leader who is clearly aligned with BCNPHA's mission of providing a safe, secure, and affordable home for everyone. The candidate should have the following qualifications:

  • At least one of the following:
    • Professional Engineer (P. Eng)
    • Certified Energy Manager (CEM)
    • Masters' designation in business or appropriate business field
    • Or equivalent professional experience

Experience:

  • At least 5 years of management experience in a relevant and comparably complex and established organization.
  • Experience as part of a leadership team in a mission and values-driven organization.
  • Demonstrated relationship-building with direct team, cross departments, board of directors, and stakeholders.
  • Proven project management experience.
  • Experience with Boards and committees.
  • Combination of knowledge and experience with energy efficiency and high-performance building design, including:
    • Solid working knowledge of HVAC and lighting systems, energy conservation measures, building control systems, and building envelope design.
    • Experience with new construction design and/or existing building auditing.
    • Sound knowledge of energy audits/studies and utility incentive programs.
    • Familiarity with capital planning, life-cycle cost analysis, LEED Green Building Rating System, and greenhouse gas emissions.

Skills:

  • Exceptional communication skills, the ability to provide excellent client service, and a commitment to sustainable building design.
  • Strong professional verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate in a timely manner appropriate with staff and partners.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and adaptability to a changing environment are a must to be successful in this changing sector.
  • Strong analytical and data-driven decision-making abilities.

Working Conditions

  • Some travel around British Columbia will be required.

BCNPHA's Director of Building Asset and Energy Management position is a strategic leadership role with one of the largest management portfolios within the organization and is budgeted to pay competitively within the sector, depending on experience. The salary band is between $115,850 to $139,243, in addition to excellent benefits and RSP matching.
