Position Overview
Thales Canada is seeking a Marine Surveyor to assist in its Non-Combatant In-Service Support Programs for the Royal Canadian Navy along Canada's East Coast.
The Thales Marine Surveyor – East Coast (MS-E) will collaborate with the Thales Lifecycle Cost Management & Engineering and Service Delivery Teams to deliver project oversight and technical assistance for various Royal Canadian Navy Non-Combatant Platforms. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the planning and execution of vessel surveys, along with the creation of survey documentation, repair specifications, and other technical support activities essential for managing vessel certification and configuration.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist the Thales Certification Officer and engineering staff in the planning and execution of classification surveys and other certification tasks;
- Organize and conduct pre-docking surveys, Annual Condition Surveys, and compile Annual Condition Survey Reports, ensuring compliance with DND and Classification Society standards;
- Contribute to the development of docking specifications, work packages, technical proposals, and scopes of work;
- Utilize insights from previous surveys and dockings to enhance configuration baseline changes and process improvements;
- Create repair plans and guidelines for hull and equipment repair specifications;
- Additional support tasks for the Thales Lifecycle Cost Management & Engineering team may include reviewing engineering and certification processes to identify improvement opportunities.
Minimum Qualifications
- Completion of a 3-year technical program diploma (for Technologists) or a 2-year technical program diploma (for Technicians) in a marine technical discipline from a recognized institution; or certification as a technologist or technician by a recognized licensing body in a relevant field;
- Certification in one of the following technical trades of the Canadian Armed Forces: Marine Technician RQ-PO1 or RQ-PO2; QL 6A or 6B Marine Electrician; QL 6A or 6B Naval Electronics Technician; QL6A or QL7 Marine Engineer; QL 6A or 6B Hull Technician;
- A minimum of 8 years of relevant professional experience in the marine/offshore sector within the last 15 years; prior experience as a Marine Surveyor with a Classification Society or within the Royal Canadian Navy is preferred;
- Five years of experience in surveying or maintaining vessels to commercial or military standards;
- Proven experience in planning, managing, and executing ship dockings and dry dock refits; comprehensive understanding of Classification Society rules and regulations (Lloyd's Register, ABS, DNV) for ship classification, Naval Ship Classification Rules, and Commercial Ship Rules; familiarity with International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) and International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards.
Preferred Qualifications
- Over 5 years of experience in project management related to ship repair and engineering change initiatives; experience with design, testing, and certification of shipboard lifting devices including marine cranes; knowledge of conducting weight and stability calculations, lightship surveys, inclining tests, and lightship surveys;
- Familiarity with the International Code for Ships Operating in Polar Waters (the Polar Code) and ANEP 77 (Naval Ship Code); previous experience with the Royal Canadian Navy or Canadian Coast Guard; experience in providing marine in-service support for operational assets.
Special Position Requirements
- This role involves a combination of office work and fieldwork at dockyards and on-board naval vessels.
- Must be able to conduct inspections in machinery and confined spaces of naval ships, which may require physical maneuvering.
