Job Title: Chief Planner and Executive Director, City Planning

At the National League of Cities, we are seeking a visionary leader to spearhead our City Planning Division. As Chief Planner and Executive Director, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our city, driving strategic initiatives, and fostering vibrant, sustainable communities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement divisional goals, objectives, and priorities that align with our city's planning initiatives and Council priorities.
  • Governance and Policy: Design and implement governance structures, policies, and procedures to enhance customer experiences and ensure compliance.
  • Financial Management: Develop and administer the annual budget, negotiate funding requirements, and ensure expenditures are controlled within approved budget limitations.
  • Relationship Management: Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including Council members, community groups, and private sector partners.
  • Communication and Public Relations: Promote and manage public and media relations, communicating the vision and ensuring community and staff involvement.
  • Operational Management: Establish systems, programs, and processes to maximize effectiveness, efficiency, and resource control.
  • Human Resources and Labour Relations: Engage with labor unions and provide advice on collective agreements and administration.
  • Strategic Planning and Issue Management: Identify emerging issues, priorities, and sensitive matters, developing strategies to address them.

Candidate Profile: We seek a strategic leader with expertise in governance, policy development, and stakeholder management. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of driving collaborative plans, enhancing customer experiences, and maintaining positive media relations. Strong operational management abilities, including change management and personnel development, are essential.
