About the Role

We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Unit Clerk to join our Surgical Unit at Burnaby Hospital. As a key member of our team, you will provide exceptional patient care and administrative support to our healthcare professionals.

Responsibilities
  1. Process physicians' written orders and flag charts for RN review.
  2. Compile charts and Kardex on admission, prepare and complete necessary documentation for admission of surgical patients, discharges, transfers, or patient death.
  3. Maintain departmental timekeeping, enter payroll data into the computer, print reports for the manager, and make adjustments as required.
  4. Answer telephone calls, take and relay messages, answer routine inquiries, or refer as appropriate; open and distribute mail, faxes, etc.
  5. Act as a receptionist, greet and direct visitors and patients.
  6. Orient new staff and students to the unit, demonstrate procedures, answer questions, and explain unit organization and layout.
  7. Pick up and sign for narcotics as required.
  8. Maintain stationery and supply levels for the unit, monitor stock, and prepare requisitions for reorder.
  9. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Grade 12 completion of a Unit Clerk Program plus one year's recent, related experience as a unit clerk in an acute facility or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Ability to type at 40 w.p.m.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal with others effectively.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and organize workload.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Ability to operate a computer and related equipment.
