Position Overview:

Under the guidance of the Operations Manager and aligned with the Centre's mission and objectives, the Trauma Support Specialist plays a crucial role as part of a dedicated team. This position is focused on delivering specialized support services to Indigenous women and their children who have faced trauma, domestic violence, and challenges related to the child welfare and criminal justice systems. The aim is to empower Residents in their journey towards successful community reintegration.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work or a related field in Social Sciences, accompanied by a minimum of two years of experience working with Indigenous communities affected by complex traumas. The organization reserves the right to consider a combination of relevant work and life experiences.
  • In-depth knowledge and practical experience in trauma-informed counseling techniques.
  • Understanding of the dynamics surrounding family violence, child welfare, and criminal justice issues as they relate to Indigenous women and children.
  • Awareness of the long-term impacts of abuse and community violence on Indigenous populations.
  • Respect for Indigenous cultures, traditions, and the specific issues faced by Indigenous women is essential.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced and often high-pressure environment.
  • Competence in understanding offender behavior dynamics and assessing their needs and risks.
  • Skills to effectively counsel residents/offenders, build trusting relationships, and foster a supportive environment.
  • Capability to utilize authority appropriately in supervision and to intervene effectively during crises.
  • Ability to assist offenders in recognizing and addressing practical challenges related to their reintegration into the community.
  • Proficiency in handling stressful situations with a calm and de-escalating approach.
  • Skills to identify and secure necessary community services for successful reintegration.
  • Strong assessment and problem-solving abilities.
  • Experience in group presentation and facilitation.
  • Basic proficiency in computer usage and data management.
  • Knowledge of an Indigenous language or dialect is a significant advantage.
  • Current certifications in CPR/First Aid, along with a Child Abuse Registry and Criminal Records Check, are mandatory. Candidates must also be able to obtain Enhanced Security clearance.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
