As a Patent Counsel at TD Bank, you will be an integral part of our dynamic legal team, situated in a collaborative environment. Key Responsibilities:Your primary focus will be on providing expert legal guidance related to the development and management of TD's expanding patent portfolio. You will:
- Collaborate with key stakeholders to identify and capitalize on patentable innovations within our diverse development teams.
- Evaluate new inventions for patent eligibility and participate in decision-making committees regarding patent applications.
- Partner with external legal counsel and internal teams to prepare and submit patent applications in both Canada and the United States.
- Oversee ongoing patent prosecution efforts, ensuring compliance with deadlines while managing costs effectively.
- Handle various tasks associated with the administration and upkeep of TD's growing collection of patents.
- Assist in formulating TD's patent strategy and support patent litigation efforts, including responding to infringement claims.
- Provide legal insights on intellectual property matters related to corporate agreements.
- Stay informed on evolving patent laws and technological advancements, drafting briefings and providing advice as necessary.
- Manage TD's patent budget and oversee the software utilized for intellectual property portfolio management.
- Engage in colleague development by sharing knowledge on relevant legal issues and regulatory changes.
- Contribute to high-priority projects and initiatives within the Legal Department.
- Support knowledge management efforts by documenting legal advice and other valuable resources.
The ideal candidate will possess:
- A degree in a technical discipline such as engineering, computer science, or physics.
- Registration as a patent agent with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office, the United States Patent and Trademark Office, or both.
- A law degree from an accredited institution and qualification to practice law in Canada is advantageous.
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in patent prosecution, either in a law firm or in-house setting.
- Strong analytical skills and exceptional written and verbal communication abilities.
- The capacity to manage multiple tasks efficiently while maintaining attention to detail.
- Independence in thought and action, along with excellent interpersonal skills.
- A proactive approach to learning and a curiosity for a wide range of topics.
- Experience working effectively with external legal counsel.
