Job Overview
TERMINAL CONSTRUCTION PROJECT COORDINATOR
Location: Hybrid work environment
Number of Positions: 3
About the Organization
BC Ferries is the primary provider of passenger and vehicle ferry services for coastal regions along the west coast of British Columbia. From our humble beginnings with two ferries on a single route, we have expanded to a fleet of 39 vessels, transporting over 22 million passengers and 8 million vehicles annually across 25 routes.
Our commitment extends beyond merely facilitating travel; we are stewards of the coastal environment and the communities we serve, fostering connections between people and places that matter. As an asset owner, we are responsible for the operation, maintenance, and renewal of significant marine and shore-based infrastructure at our terminals.
With an ambitious capital plan in place, the Terminal Construction department is expanding, and we are seeking three dedicated, full-time Project Coordinators to support the planning and execution of over 200 capital initiatives across our terminals.
Our projects encompass a wide range of disciplines, including full berth replacements, marine structure life extensions, terminal redevelopments, building renovations, electrification efforts, and various mechanical and electrical upgrades. This role offers the chance to engage with complex and large-scale projects, collaborate with diverse stakeholders, and navigate intricate operational settings.
If you thrive in dynamic environments where no two days are alike, this opportunity within the BC Ferries Terminal Construction team may be the perfect fit for you.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Program Manager - Terminal Construction, the Project Coordinator will:
- Provide professional and technical assistance to Project Managers or Senior Project Managers overseeing civil, marine, and building infrastructure projects across various coastal locations;
- Aid in project planning, scheduling, budgeting, and monthly progress reporting;
- Organize infrastructure inspections and site investigations while supervising site activities;
- Support design development and the procurement of services and goods, including preparing tenders and contracts;
- Collaborate with contractors, consultants, regulatory agencies, First Nations communities, and the public;
- Conduct on-site supervision and construction management for select projects;
- Maintain document control and assist or lead other terminal construction-related tasks;
- Support departmental leadership in a variety of administrative or technical activities and assignments;
- Independently manage the planning and execution of smaller, less complex projects with guidance from a Project Manager.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a blend of technical and project management expertise, with a willingness to learn and adapt to new technical areas. You should be a proactive team player, detail-oriented, and possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills to foster relationships with project teams, department staff, consultants, contractors, and other stakeholders.
Additional qualifications include:
- A diploma or degree in engineering, architecture, construction management, building technology, or a related field;
- 2 to 5 years of progressive experience in engineering, construction, or capital project coordination;
- Membership or eligibility for registration as an EIT or Professional Engineer with EGBC, or as a Technologist with ASTTBC, or equivalent;
- Experience with an Owner's organization is advantageous;
- Project Management Professional (PMP) designation is a plus, or a willingness to pursue it in the future.
Knowledge and Skills
- Familiarity with project management and engineering principles and methodologies;
- Experience in planning, design, procurement, and construction;
- Understanding of construction contract law, public procurement principles, and technical documentation;
- Knowledge of current standards, codes, bylaws, and regulatory requirements;
- Proficiency in standard business applications (MS Word, Excel, Outlook) and MS Project;
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to maintain effective working relationships;
- Ability to work independently or collaboratively within a team;
- Capability to provide effective solutions to complex challenges;
- A valid BC driver's license and willingness to travel throughout coastal BC.
Commitment to Diversity
At BC Ferries, we value diversity and inclusivity in our workplace. We encourage applications from all qualified individuals, including women, visible minorities, Indigenous Peoples, persons with disabilities, and members of the LGBTQ2S+ community.
We appreciate the interest of all applicants; however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
