Engineering Assistant I

The District of West Vancouver is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our Engineering Department as a temporary full-time Engineering Assistant I. This exciting opportunity is ideal for an engineering student looking to gain hands-on experience in a municipal environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Conduct site inspections to identify and document sightline issues related to vegetation encroachments;
  2. Collect and analyze data for roads, bike lanes, sidewalks, and multi-use pathways to inform infrastructure planning and development;
  3. Prepare technical reports and responses to resident inquiries, requests, and complaints in a clear and concise manner;
  4. Assist with the preparation of construction notices and street occupancy permits to ensure compliance with municipal regulations;
  5. Conduct preliminary reviews of locations with traffic issues and report findings to the supervisor;
  6. Perform other related tasks as required to support the Engineering Department's operations.
Preferred Candidate Qualifications:
  1. Enrolled in an Applied Science program at a reputable institution, such as the University of British Columbia;
  2. Able to commit to a 4 or 8 month work term.
Required Skills:
  1. Demonstrated knowledge of civil engineering projects and construction methodology;
  2. Proficient in Microsoft Office, Outlook, and Excel;
  3. Excellent customer service skills, with strong verbal and written communication skills;
  4. Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License for the Province of British Columbia;
  5. Access to a personal vehicle to commute to work and perform site visits as needed;
  6. Working knowledge of AutoCAD is considered an asset.

The successful candidate will be required to undergo a Police Information Check and provide a copy of their credentials.

Position Status: Union (WVMEA) – Temporary, Full-time

Hours of Work: 35 hours per week (hours and days of work may vary)

Rate of Pay: $26.87 per hour (2022 Rates) plus 12% in lieu of benefits
