Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Excavator Operator to join our team at NWT Construction, a division of Colas Western Canada Inc. As a key member of our road construction team, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the excavator, ensuring high-quality results and meeting project deadlines.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate the excavator in a safe and efficient manner, adhering to company policies and procedures.
  • Perform daily maintenance and safety checks on equipment to ensure optimal performance.
  • Conduct pre-operational checks on equipment, and clean, lubricate, and refill as necessary.
  • Collaborate with ground personnel to excavate and install pipe, ensuring accurate placement and grade.
  • Ensure trenches are excavated to the correct depth and grade, meeting project specifications.
  • Responsible for placing water, storm, and sanitary sewer pipe in the excavation, following established procedures.
  • Follow directions from ground crew regarding craning, gravel placement, and grading.
  • Cut grade with minimal time spent on excavating, ensuring production meets schedule requirements.
  • Conduct trench work, adhering to OH&S regulations.
  • Operate the excavator on public roadways, maintaining awareness of surroundings.
  • Ensure a thorough understanding of ground disturbance issues.
  • Be aware of proper rigging of pipe, manhole barrels, etc., and ensure safe work procedures are followed during material lowering.
  • Perform routine cleaning and maintenance to ensure smooth excavator operation.
  • Train employees in safe and efficient excavator operation.
  • Other operation-related duties as required.
Requirements
  • High School diploma or G.E.D. preferred.
  • Class 5 driver's license required.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in the road construction industry.
  • 2-3 years of experience operating a Mainline Hoe is required.
Working Conditions
  • Weather-dependent schedule, Monday to Saturday, up to 12 hours, with overtime paid in accordance with local employment standards legislation.
  • Out-of-town travel may be required, with accommodations and Live Out Allowance applicable.
  • Work performed in an outdoor setting, exposed to inclement weather, heat, humidity, dust, and asphalt.
  • Must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry at least 50 LBS on a regular basis.
  • Use of Personal Protection Equipment is required.
  • Must comply with the company's drug and alcohol testing requirements.
