About Our OpportunityUnder the supervision of the Hatchery Supervisor, the Fisheries Technician 2 is responsible for a comprehensive range of technical tasks and support activities essential for the daily operations of the hatchery.
Key ResponsibilitiesYour duties will include:
- Operating and maintaining all hatchery machinery and associated infrastructure.
- Ensuring the safe transport, distribution, and release of hatchery-reared fish into public water bodies.
- Conducting fish culture operations for various species, including collection, brood stock development, spawning, incubation, and nutrition management.
- Assisting in the implementation of feeding schedules and monitoring water quality to ensure optimal growth conditions.
- Monitoring fish health and administering treatments as necessary.
- Providing technical assistance to conservation organizations regarding fish egg incubation and early rearing practices.
- Conducting fieldwork and creel surveys as required.
- Supporting public engagement initiatives, conservation education, and research activities related to fishery management.
This role demands a working knowledge of pumps, valves, and motors, along with techniques for collecting wild fish using various sampling gear.
Analytical skills are essential for interpreting data such as inventories and water quality metrics, enabling you to recommend corrective actions for operational issues. Attention to detail and organizational skills are crucial for success in this position. Collaboration and effective communication with colleagues, external agencies, and the public are also vital.
Qualifications and ExperienceA college diploma or relevant post-secondary education combined with two years of related experience is required, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Proficiency in all aspects of hatchery operations and fish production is essential, including capturing, spawning, incubating, rearing, and releasing fish. Familiarity with fish health protocols and culture techniques is necessary.
Experience with various fish species and knowledge of dietary disorders, parasitic infections, and treatment procedures is preferred. Understanding of safety practices related to hatchery operations and fieldwork is also important. Specific training in areas such as electrofishing, swift-water rescue, and safe watercraft operation would be advantageous.

Salary Range: $1,020.82 Bi-Weekly
