POSITION OVERVIEW

The Odawa Native Friendship Centre is on the lookout for a dedicated full-time Criminal Justice Peer Support Worker. This role is designed to assist Indigenous individuals engaged with the criminal justice system by offering essential support that bridges the gap between judicial proceedings and community resources.

Reporting to the Reaching Home Program Manager, the primary responsibilities of the Criminal Justice Peer Support Worker encompass meeting clients in court or community settings, accompanying them to scheduled appointments, supporting their individualized plans, and documenting their progress. Adherence to workplace regulations, health and safety standards, and organizational policies is crucial. Maintaining a professional demeanor and appearance is expected at all times.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Completion of a college or university diploma, or equivalent experience.
  • Required experience working with Indigenous populations involved in the criminal justice system.
  • Proven ability to meet daily deadlines independently.
  • Possession of or willingness to obtain a Criminal Vulnerable Sector check.
  • Flexibility to work varied hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed.
  • Experience or personal insight into related fields such as criminal justice, homelessness, intergenerational trauma, or mental health is preferred.

KEY DUTIES

  • Collaborate closely with the Shawenjeagamik Drop-In staff and Odawa's Justice Team.
  • Establish and nurture positive relationships with assigned clients.
  • Provide clients with information regarding available services and resources.
  • Assist clients in adhering to their plans by facilitating appointments related to housing, employment, education, health, and other necessary services.
  • Deliver practical, non-therapeutic individual support.
  • Maintain accurate records and statistics, providing reports to the Manager as required.
  • Demonstrate the ability to manage high-stress situations and adapt to evolving circumstances.
  • Exhibit strong interpersonal skills and a team-oriented mindset.
  • Possess knowledge of community and social services in the Ottawa Region.
  • Show compassion and empathy towards the unique needs of service users.
  • Communicate effectively and tactfully, both verbally and in writing.
  • Manage challenging situations with professionalism.
  • Demonstrate basic computer skills and file management capabilities.
  • Knowledge of an Indigenous language is an asset but not mandatory.
  • Complete the Health & Safety Awareness for Ontario training course.
  • Complete the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act and Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation course.
  • Adhere to all health and safety regulations.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Adaptability and flexibility are essential in our dynamic organization.
  • Standard working conditions apply to an office environment.
  • Work hours consist of seven (7) hours per day, with occasional overtime, from 7:30 am to 3:00 pm, including a 30-minute lunch break.
  • Evening and weekend work may be required.

COMPENSATION

Salary will be determined based on the candidate's experience and educational background.
