Position Overview

Under the supervision of the Student Support Navigator, the Peer Support Student Assistant serves as a welcoming presence on campus, dedicated to aiding students with personal experiences in care who are engaging with Douglas College and BC's Provincial Tuition Waiver Program, as well as those from alternative educational backgrounds.

The Peer Support Student Assistant's mission is to foster a secure, inclusive, and inviting atmosphere for this specific student demographic.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage with students in various roles to provide essential support.
  • Act as a peer mentor, offering guidance on college procedures and experiences related to the tuition waiver.
  • Assist in organizing and facilitating regular community-building events to enhance the overall student experience in post-secondary education.
  • Help connect students with on-campus and off-campus resources, collaborating with relevant services to improve accessibility.
  • Promote awareness of the Tuition Waiver Program and available support for youth with care backgrounds.
  • Guide prospective and current students through the application process for the Provincial Tuition Waiver Program.
  • Collaborate with other departments and teams as necessary.

Qualifications for Success:

  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0.
  • Possess an understanding of social justice principles and the impacts of colonialism.
  • Have completed at least one year of college-level coursework at Douglas College and be a current student.
  • Familiarity with the resources and services available to students at Douglas College.
  • Awareness of the unique challenges faced by students with lived experiences in government care.
  • Knowledge of alternative educational systems.
  • Ability to implement trauma-informed practices.
  • Capable of working effectively with a diverse student body.
  • Basic computer proficiency and strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Self-driven, demonstrating initiative, creativity, and attention to detail.
  • Understanding of bursaries and grants accessible to this student population.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with personal experiences in government care and those utilizing the Provincial Tuition Waiver Program at Douglas College or from alternative educational backgrounds.

Eligibility Criteria:

Domestic students must meet one of the following requirements to qualify for the Student Assistant role:

  1. Enrolled in and maintaining a minimum of one (3 credit) course at Douglas College throughout the work term.
  2. Previously enrolled in and maintained a minimum of one (3 credit) course at Douglas College in the term immediately preceding the work term, with an intention to enroll in the following term.
  3. Enrolled in and maintaining a minimum of two (3 credit) courses at another accredited public post-secondary institution in B.C. throughout the work term.
  4. Previously enrolled in and maintained a minimum of two (3 credit) courses at another accredited public post-secondary institution in B.C. in the term immediately preceding the work term, with an intention to enroll in the following term.

International students must meet one of the following requirements to qualify for the Student Assistant role:

  1. Enrolled in full-time studies at Douglas College throughout the academic year.
  2. International students from another accredited public post-secondary institution in B.C. must possess a valid Study Permit with the notation allowing employment, along with proof of full-time enrollment.

Compliance with legal requirements includes providing an original copy of a Social Insurance Number (SIN) and an original Study Permit before commencing work.
