Senior Manager, Indigenous Client Relations

At KPMG, you will become part of a team of diverse and committed professionals, united by a shared mission: transforming insights into opportunities for clients and communities globally.
In today's landscape, evolving community demographics, heightened business activities, governance challenges, intricate financial systems, and limited investment resources and training are critical factors for businesses, non-profits, governments, and entrepreneurs. Fostering connections among businesses, educational institutions, governmental bodies, and healthcare partners is essential for achieving positive outcomes.
KPMG's Indigenous Client Services (ICS) experts cater to the distinct requirements of Indigenous organizations, communities, and cultures throughout Canada. With extensive experience across various sectors and agencies, we collaborate with our clients, equipping them with the technical expertise and insights necessary for success.
We are seeking a Tax Senior Manager to join our Indigenous client services team. This role presents an excellent opportunity to enhance your skills, address the unique needs of Indigenous organizations and communities across Canada, broaden your internal and external networks, and play a pivotal role in the expansion of our practice.
As a key member, you will collaborate closely with KPMG Partners on tax-related matters, including planning, due diligence, mergers and acquisitions, compliance, and tax-exempt status requirements. Your organizational abilities will enable you to oversee the work of junior staff, ensuring their output is accurate and complete. Furthermore, you will research and assist our clients in navigating the specific nuances of their individual tax and compliance challenges, considering the broader implications for their businesses. The ideal candidate is dedicated to cultivating long-term relationships, both within our organization and with clients and stakeholders in the community.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with First Nations clients and Indigenous-led organizations to lead client engagements.
- Work closely with team members as a senior contributor on tax planning initiatives for clients.
- Utilize knowledge of the Indian Act in client interactions.
- Plan and organize teams for tax return preparation and conduct tax research presentations.
- Provide advice on planning opportunities, tax minimization strategies, and compliance matters.
- Advise on tax exemptions under Section 87 of the Indian Act and potential exemptions available under Section 149 of the Income Tax Act.
- Review junior staff work for accuracy and completeness.
- Become an integral part of the tax engagement team to meet client needs.
- Offer ongoing support and mentorship for the professional growth of staff.
- Establish and maintain respectful relationships with Indigenous clients in First Nations communities, businesses, non-profits, and entrepreneurial roles.
- Professional accounting designation.
- A minimum of 7 years of experience specializing in tax within public accounting is preferred.
- Enrollment in or completion of the CPA In Depth Tax program is advantageous.
- Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous Culture, Governance, Treaties and Rights, Reconciliation, and Indigenous History in Canada.
- Experience working directly with Indigenous communities, governments, and associations.
- Familiarity with the Indian Act and its tax implications.
- Understanding of Section 149 tax exemptions of the Income Tax Act.
- Knowledge of trust taxation and the taxation of partnerships.
- Experience structuring Indigenous businesses to maintain tax exemptions.
- Experience with due diligence, mergers and acquisitions, and structuring Indigenous and Non-Indigenous business relationships is a plus.
- Strong people management skills.
- Highly motivated individual with a desire for professional growth.
- Exceptional client service skills with the ability to comprehend clients' business needs.
- Commitment to delivering high standards of client service and professionalism in all duties.
- Focus on quality and value in client offerings and services.
- Strong project management and organizational skills.
- Ability to effectively manage competing demands and priorities.
- Encourage others to take on new tasks and responsibilities.
The anticipated base salary range for this position is $97,500 to $151,000, with potential eligibility for bonus awards. The determination of an applicant's base salary within this range is based on individual location, skills, competencies, and unique qualifications. Additionally, KPMG offers a comprehensive and competitive Total Rewards program.
