Position Overview

Join Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) as a Psychiatric Care Nurse. We are seeking a Registered Psychiatric Nurse or Registered Nurse to be part of our Vancouver Community Clinical Casual Pool Team, providing essential support to Mental Health teams throughout the Vancouver Community. Responsibilities of the Psychiatric Care Nurse at VCH include:

  • Deliver tailored direct nursing care and brokerage services to clients experiencing severe and persistent mental health challenges, concurrent disorders, and/or dementia.
  • Manage a comprehensive range of clinical practices and client-centered rehabilitation programs, working both independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Enhance the quality of life from the viewpoint of clients and their families.
  • Conduct physical and psychosocial rehabilitation assessments.
  • Collaborate with other healthcare professionals and family members to create, implement, evaluate, and adjust personalized strength-based treatment plans.
  • Build, maintain, and strengthen therapeutic relationships grounded in respect.
  • Administer prescribed medications, monitor client responses, and provide ongoing education to clients and families regarding daily living activities, medication use, side effects, and the integration of illness into their lives.
  • Prepare and maintain client documentation in accordance with established standards, participate in team meetings, engage in team planning and quality improvement initiatives, and continuously update personal knowledge.
Required Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Diploma in Nursing or Psychiatric Nursing along with two (2) years of recent relevant experience working with individuals facing severe and persistent psychiatric conditions, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Valid BC Driver's License; local travel may necessitate the use of a personal vehicle.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Understanding of client and family-centered recovery models in mental health.
  • Familiarity with concurrent disorders.
  • Knowledge of Psychosocial Rehabilitation methodologies.
  • Awareness of the Mental Health Act concerning the rights and responsibilities of clients and staff.
  • Knowledge of community, social, and mental health resources.
  • Ability to identify emotional, social, or environmental barriers and work to eliminate stigma.
  • Proficiency in managing conflict situations and aggressive behavior, utilizing non-violent crisis intervention and behavioral management techniques.
  • Capability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with clients, families, team members, and community agency personnel.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed care practices.
  • Proven ability in nursing practices related to behavior assessment and assisting clients in regaining or enhancing their coping skills, preventing further disability.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and co-lead group sessions.
  • Competence in planning and implementing care strategies.
  • Skill in assessing client responses to care and responding appropriately.
  • Ability to adapt to unexpected situations, solve problems, and prioritize tasks.
  • Experience in developing and delivering educational programs and materials for clients and families based on educational theories, principles, and best practices.
  • Proven collaborative skills as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Ability to counsel and educate clients and their families.
  • Experience in mentoring new staff and students.
  • Leadership skills demonstrated through initiative and independence.
  • Proficiency in clinical techniques and the use of relevant equipment and supplies.
  • Competence in CPR techniques.
  • Physical capability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Basic computer skills to operate a computerized client care information system and use word processing, spreadsheet, Internet, and email software.
