About Grafana Cloud

Grafana Cloud serves as our modular observability platform, integrating metrics, logs, and traces seamlessly with Grafana. It empowers our clients to utilize premier open-source observability tools, including Prometheus, Mimir, Loki, and Tempo, without the complexities of installation, maintenance, and scaling their own observability infrastructure.

The Observability division is dedicated to equipping developers with the insights needed to monitor the health and performance of their applications and infrastructure across various environments. We provide tools to instrument code, ingest observability data into Grafana Cloud, and visualize and analyze it effectively.

Grafana Alloy is an open-source distribution of the OpenTelemetry Collector, featuring built-in Prometheus pipelines and support for metrics, logs, traces, and profiles. The Alloy team collaborates closely with the upstream OpenTelemetry collector community to enhance the components included in our distribution. We also address use cases that extend beyond OpenTelemetry's scope, such as integrating Prometheus exporters.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the technical vision for the Alloy project and guide discussions regarding the data ingestion strategy at Grafana Labs.
  • Actively participate in the OpenTelemetry collector SIG. Alloy shares numerous components with the upstream OpenTelemetry collector project, and we aim to support OpenTelemetry's success while encouraging active participation from others.
  • Maintain familiarity with the Prometheus ecosystem and oversee the Prometheus exporters included in Alloy.
  • Enhance visibility. Educate others, advocate for best practices, share knowledge, and establish the relationship between Alloy and the Prometheus and OpenTelemetry ecosystems, both within Grafana Labs and at community events.
  • Collaborate with GTM (go-to-market) teams. Engage in discussions with prospects and customers when product expertise is required, involving solutions engineering, customer success, and professional services.
  • Drive cross-department initiatives to ensure that Alloy-ingested data aligns with the requirements of our databases (Mimir, Loki, Tempo) and applications built on these databases.
  • Participate in on-call rotations. Engage in on-call duties for our Alloy deployments and spearhead operational enhancements.

Given our remote-first approach and the largely remote nature of our engineering organization, we emphasize the importance of independent work and effective communication skills.

Qualifications:

  • At Grafana Labs, we assess senior roles based on their business impact rather than solely on expertise or specific tasks. The primary quality we seek in a principal engineer is the capacity to take ownership and lead both technical and business discussions at a director-level scope.
  • A passion for observability and a willingness to share knowledge through documentation and blog posts.
  • Strong customer engagement skills and a desire to assist clients.
  • Exceptional communication abilities.
  • Relevant open-source experience, preferably in OpenTelemetry or Prometheus.
  • A commitment to becoming an active participant in the OpenTelemetry community.
  • A solid understanding of production environments, ideally with experience in managing production infrastructure and services, as well as organizing on-call duties.
  • A proactive approach to mentoring team members, identifying areas for growth and improvement.

Compensation:

In Canada, the base compensation range for this role is CAD 188,000 - CAD 225,000. Actual compensation may vary based on level, experience, and skillset as assessed during the interview process. Benefits include equity, bonuses (if applicable), and other listed benefits.
