Qualifications: Education, Training, and Experience

A Bachelor's Degree in a health-related field from an accredited post-secondary institution is required.

Completion of recognized post-basic education focused on mental health issues and/or substance use disorders; a minimum of two (2) years of recent relevant experience; a solid understanding of mental health and substance use challenges; proficiency in conducting substance misuse assessments, implementing treatment strategies, and utilizing intervention techniques, as well as knowledge of community dynamics.

Familiarity with relevant legislation, including Mental Health and Child Protection laws. Awareness of available community programs and services, their interconnections, and their roles in service delivery. Alternatively, an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

A valid BC Driver's License is mandatory.

Skills and Abilities
  • Proven expertise in addressing addiction and mental health issues in alignment with VIHA's framework and standards, emphasizing rehabilitation and recovery within a harm-reduction model;
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong interpersonal abilities.
  • Organizational, problem-solving, and instructional skills.
  • Sound judgment, keen observational skills, and client assessment capabilities, along with tact and empathy when working with clients facing addiction challenges.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Capacity to foster positive change and promote client independence.
  • Competence in prioritizing and managing workload efficiently.
  • Proficiency in executing the responsibilities of the position.
  • Familiarity with operating a personal computer and various Windows-based software applications.
  • Skills in maintaining positive public relations.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
