Job Title: Project Engineer/Officer

Join the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) as a Project Engineer/Officer and contribute to the safe, long-term management of Canada's used nuclear fuel.

About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Project Engineer/Officer to join our team. As a key member of our multidisciplinary technical team, you will provide project management expertise and guidance, and be responsible for the technical aspects of your assigned projects related to the design, development, construction, commissioning, and operations of Canada's Deep Geological Repository.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan, schedule, predict, and manage assigned projects to ensure all project outputs are aligned with quality requirements from start to finish.
  • Undertake and be responsible for the planning, scheduling, coordinating, and monitoring of assigned technical projects/contracts from inception and approval to final acceptance.
  • Manage external design agencies for engineering design oversight contracts related to Human Factors Engineering, Pressure Boundary Applications, Fire Protection Engineering, and other technical services in support of the APM DGR facility design development.
  • Ensure design management process requirements are adhered to with a focus on design verification.
  • Develop project execution strategies and plans, including objectives and scope definition, cost estimates, and schedule.
  • Provide advice and guidance to others involved in interconnected and cross-project activities.
  • Prepare compliance matrices to ensure all project requirements identified during the scope are complied with.
  • Meet with consultants and contractors as required to interpret requirements, review progress, address deviations from plans, and obtain cooperation in processes and discuss ideas.
  • Develop reports on project status and progress as required, including variance reports.
  • Actively participate in the preparation of engineering documents required to support Tailored Impact Assessment Guidelines required by the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada.
  • Review, consolidate, and author technical engineering documents to support Regulatory License Application submissions.
  • Review technical documents and provide feedback on completeness and adherence to technical and regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor compliance and ensure that all work activities reflect an awareness of, and compliance with, regulatory requirements, adherence to applicable codes and standards, are consistent with industry best practices, and meet NWMO's quality requirements.
  • Communicate (written and oral) findings of work to stakeholders, including technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Promote and support a strong safety culture to meet NWMO's Human Performance requirements and ensure Health, Safety, and Environment Safety requirements are met or exceeded.
Requirements
  • Four-year university degree in Engineering.
  • A minimum of 8-10 years of relevant experience in full-cycle projects and contract management, including the management of complex technical projects from concept through to operations.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of contract and project management principles and practices, including conceptual planning and all phases of design.
  • Direct experience preparing design documents in support of regulatory submissions.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Programs (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical specifications and procedures, governmental regulation, policies, and procedures, and technical reports.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills to present information and respond to questions from public officials, contractors, the public, and other stakeholders.
  • Strong people skills, experience working collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team, and with external contractors.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and be flexible to travel when needed.
Assets
  • Knowledge of Human Factors and/or Fire Protection and/or Pressure Boundary Applications.
  • Strong writing skills and the ability to distill complicated technical documents into concise summaries.
  • Familiarity with project and contract management.
  • Experience working at a licensed nuclear facility.
  • Knowledge in the preparation of design documentation in support of regulatory submissions.
  • Knowledge of Federal Impact Assessment Act requirements for large capital projects.
  • Knowledge of nuclear quality requirements (e.g., CSA N286, N299) and other industrial quality standards.
