POSITION OVERVIEW

The Globe and Mail is in search of a driven Visual Content Editor who possesses a fervor for photography and visual storytelling. This position entails assigning and sourcing images and crafting visually engaging articles for a wide array of feature stories, including but not limited to food, travel, health, culture, and lifestyle.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong news judgment and an instinctive grasp of what constitutes a compelling narrative. They should be adept at collaborating with editors and reporters to transform concepts into polished digital articles, ensuring that visuals are effectively utilized to create an engaging reader experience. Proficient technical editing skills and a passion for the evolution of visual journalism in a digital landscape are crucial. The candidate should excel under tight deadlines and be comfortable working both independently and collaboratively.

The Globe and Mail's visuals team is a diverse group of designers, developers, photo editors, data journalists, and graphic artists. We work in unison across all facets of The Globe's coverage, from in-depth investigative projects to breaking news and immersive storytelling formats.

The successful candidate will be a collaborative journalist and a strong advocate within the broader newsroom for the significance and value of visuals as integral to The Globe's journalism. They will also be committed to continuously enhancing processes and workflows in a dynamic media environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Collaborating with editors and reporters to devise a visual strategy for impactful stories Assigning and coordinating with freelance photographers to generate images Sourcing and curating high-quality visuals Preparing images for publication, including cropping, close-cropping, and minor adjustments Constructing digital articles using the Globe's CMS (familiarity with HTML/CSS is preferred, but coding experience is not mandatory) Collaborating with other members of the visuals team (video, data, graphics, art directors) to produce supplementary visual content when necessary Coordinating with the Programming and Audience teams to schedule publication and develop social media strategies

QUALIFICATIONS

A minimum of three years of experience with a media organization Exceptional judgment in identifying what makes a compelling visual narrative, considering technical, aesthetic details, pacing, and story structure Extensive knowledge of the technical aspects of photography and the ability to communicate these requirements effectively to other visual journalists Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, or similar photo editing software for preparing images for publication Strong understanding of the legal and ethical principles of photojournalism in the digital era Familiarity with content management systems and digital design principles is advantageous Knowledgeable about trends in digital journalism, including the role of visuals in engaging audiences on platforms like Instagram, Apple News, Google Showcase, and others

SALARY : This position is classified as a Content Editor in Group C of the Editorial Collective Agreement.
