Westside Recreation Centre is a premier facility dedicated to promoting a healthy lifestyle and wellness. Since its inception, we have been offering families a vibrant, enjoyable, and affordable environment featuring top-notch activities, including a hockey and skating arena, fitness center, gymnasium, and an aquatic park. We are seeking a dedicated Head Guard to enhance our team. The Head Guard plays a crucial role in the Westside Aquatic team, focusing on delivering a positive experience for all visitors to the Aquatic Park by upholding high safety standards, providing quality instruction, and fostering a welcoming atmosphere.

Key Responsibilities:

The Head Guard is accountable for the safe and efficient management of the aquatic area, both while lifeguarding and instructing. This role includes direct supervision of all staff on duty and collaboration with other Aquatic Supervisors, Programmers, and Managers during shifts.

  • Assist in promoting the facility and enhancing public relations and education.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the Aquatic Park to ensure health and safety.
  • Complete necessary administrative tasks effectively and within deadlines.
  • Create a work environment that fosters motivation, enthusiasm, and performance to meet job standards.

Supervision:

  • Ensure appropriate supervision for all patrons in the Aquatic Park.
  • Oversee all staff on duty, collaborating with other Aquatic Supervisors, Programmers, and Managers.
  • Encourage and motivate staff to meet performance standards.
  • Assist in covering shifts for aquatic staff as needed.
  • Lead staff in executing emergency procedures as outlined in the operations manual.
  • Work collaboratively with all employees and plan activities to optimize scheduled time and space.

Customer Service:

  • Exhibit a strong commitment to customer service.
  • Provide ongoing training and support in customer service to all Aquatic staff.
  • Address inquiries and resolve concerns from patrons using sound judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrate exceptional interpersonal, conflict-resolution, and public relations skills.

Communication & Administration:

  • Effectively plan and organize the administrative schedule.
  • Exhibit excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Document shift reports and other required communications clearly for supervisors.
  • Report on the performance of aquatic staff directly to supervisors.
  • Provide professional constructive feedback to aquatic staff on reports and training.
  • Assist in staff development and facilitate training and orientation sessions.
  • Perform First Aid and emergency procedures as necessary.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of Aquatic policies and procedures.
  • Ensure cleanliness and safety of all aquatic areas, documenting repairs and maintenance as required.
  • Deliver leadership courses and staff training.
  • Engage in required inspections, audits, and hazard assessments.
  • Promote safety awareness and compliance with health and safety standards.

Required Skills:

  • Strong communication and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proven organizational skills.
  • Experience in program development.

Physical and Psychological Demands:

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, warm, and dynamic environment.
  • Capability to meet aquatic skills aligned with Lifesaving Society standards.
  • Experience working with vulnerable populations while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Ability to lift 20-25 lbs and engage in various physical activities.
  • Extended periods of time spent in the pool and on the pool deck.
  • Exposure to pool chemicals and cleaning supplies.
  • Ability to perform administrative tasks ergonomically.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of two years of relevant aquatic experience (supervisory experience is advantageous).
  • Current Lifesaving Society Lifesaving & Swim for Life Instructor Certification.
  • Current National Lifeguard Service Award.
  • Current Alberta Approved First Aid training.
  • Lifesaving Aquatic Supervisor Training is a plus.

Employment Terms:

  • Part-time position with potential for full-time hours.
  • Availability for variable shifts and flexible hours.
  • Submission of a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check is required.
