Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Dalhousie University Full time

Department/Unit: Earth & Environmental Sciences

Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

About the Opportunity:

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Dalhousie University is inviting applications for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Land to Ocean Biogeochemistry. This position focuses on the intricate biogeochemical cycling and flux pathways within the Land to Ocean Aquatic Continuum. The selected candidate will play a pivotal role in enhancing our understanding of greenhouse gas and nutrient budgets by investigating the pathways and mechanisms involved in biogeochemical cycling across various aquatic environments, including inland waters, estuaries, tidal wetlands, and continental shelf waters.

We seek individuals whose research integrates field surveys with biogeochemical and numerical modeling, addressing aspects such as spatial variability, long-term trends, and responses to human-induced changes. Research that contributes to climate change mitigation, adaptation, and carbon dioxide removal in open systems is particularly encouraged.

Required Qualifications:

Applicants must possess a PhD and postdoctoral experience in Biogeochemistry, Geochemistry, Hydrology, Earth System Science, or a closely related discipline. Candidates should demonstrate outstanding research achievements, the potential to establish independent, externally funded research initiatives, and a strong commitment to teaching and mentoring students. The successful candidate will have a proven ability or potential to lead interdisciplinary research teams and develop a world-class graduate program.

Additional Desired Qualifications:

A robust record of scholarly publications in esteemed peer-reviewed journals, a history of securing research funding, and proficiency in advanced field and data analytical techniques are highly desirable. The ability to provide effective mentoring and instruction to both undergraduate and graduate students is essential.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will:

  • Establish and sustain a rigorous, externally funded research program.
  • Mentor graduate students.
  • Teach introductory and advanced courses in Earth and Environmental Sciences.
  • Engage in both internal and external service to the University.

The Canada Research Chair (CRC) program aims to attract exceptional researchers to the Canadian university system. Tier 2 Chairs are designated for outstanding emerging scholars who have been active in their field for less than 10 years at the time of nomination. Candidates who are more than 10 years from their highest degree may have their eligibility assessed through the CRC program's justification process, particularly in cases of career interruptions.

The successful applicant may receive research support from the Ocean Frontier Institute (OFI), which collaborates with elite researchers globally to address complex ocean challenges. Research focuses on achieving net-zero emissions, protecting biodiversity, and sustaining bioresources.

Application Requirements:

Applicants should submit:

  • A detailed curriculum vitae.
  • A two- to three-page statement of research interests.
  • A two- to three-page teaching statement outlining potential courses.
  • A one- to two-page statement regarding their commitment to Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (EDIA).
  • Three representative publications.
  • Contact information for three references.

Dalhousie University is committed to achieving inclusive excellence by promoting equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. This position is designated for an equity-deserving candidate who self-identifies as a woman or a member of another gender equity-seeking group. We encourage applications from individuals who also identify as persons with disabilities, Indigenous persons, persons of Black/African descent, and other racialized individuals, as well as those from 2SLGBTQIA+ communities.

Review of applications will commence upon receipt and will continue until the position is filled. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be prioritized.
