The Senior Financial Executive at Canadian Partnership for Women and Children is a vital member of the Leadership team, providing comprehensive strategic oversight and guidance for the organization’s Financial, Human Resources, Information Technology, and Administrative operations. Through a commitment to people-centered leadership, this role ensures operational excellence, adherence to regulations, financial integrity, and the ongoing charitable status of the organization. This position is crucial in promoting the effective and efficient operation of the organization, driving strategic advancement in key areas of organizational development, and nurturing a culture of accountability and compliance.

The Senior Financial Executive is responsible for the timely and effective communication of essential financial data and recommendations regarding the organization’s financial performance and status, including relevant trends, forecasts, risks, and opportunities to the CEO, Board, and other senior leaders. Collaborating with staff, the Executive will develop business and operational strategies while maintaining appropriate governance over investment priorities, cost structures, and control systems for the organization. This pivotal role will oversee all aspects of finance, accounting, internal controls, forecasting, budgeting, treasury, taxation, corporate insurance, and administration.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure the accuracy and timeliness of financial statements (monthly and annually)
  • Lead the formulation of the annual budget
  • Monitor compliance with the annual budget and financial plans by assessing actual results, conducting financial projections, and engaging in other financial activities as necessary
  • Oversee and support the complete range of financial and accounting functions, including reporting and analysis, accounting services, budget planning, treasury management, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, and taxation, while reviewing various service contracts
  • Guarantee that revenue and expense accounting is conducted accurately, efficiently, and promptly
  • Strategize for future financing needs and stability by proposing financial arrangements and cost-saving initiatives
  • Assist in the development of business plans and prepare financial forecasts for projects and programs
  • Provide contract administrative services to safeguard the organization’s interests
  • Monitor the financial health of the organization
  • Govern financial investments, prioritizing processes and criteria, facilitating agile decision-making, and making real-time adjustments
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory and funding agreement reporting deadlines, including managing the annual audit process
  • Coordinate external audits, filing of charity information returns, GST rebates, and other governmental reporting
  • Maintain proper accounting records and documentation in line with statutory requirements and organizational policies
  • Periodically submit key financial statements and reports, supporting the Treasurer and the Finance, Audit, and Risk Management Committee of the Board in fulfilling their responsibilities
  • Supervise the Human Resources function, encompassing talent acquisition, staff training and development, employee engagement, performance management, and succession planning
  • Oversee the management and maintenance of IT infrastructure, including hardware and software through external IT providers

Qualifications

  • Professional Accountant in good standing (CPA designation preferred)
  • 15+ years of successful professional experience in financial roles, with at least 5+ years in a senior financial leadership capacity
  • Experience in the not-for-profit sector and/or registered charities preferred
  • Knowledge of finance regulations specific to charities preferred
  • Experience in global organizations preferred
  • Proven track record of sound financial management that enables organizational growth and/or recovery from crises
  • Experience leading HR, IT, and Administration functions preferred
  • Familiarity with procurement, asset management, and business transaction services
  • Proficiency with accounting software and other computer applications
  • Experience with Salesforce and Great Plains is an asset
