Under the supervision of Management (or designate), the Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) collaborates with and supports all members of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (PLM) by executing various tasks related to the pre-analytical and post-analytical phases of testing. These tasks may encompass: specimen procurement, receipt, processing, data entry, preparation of media/reagents/smears, sterilization, clerical responsibilities, and loading specimens onto analyzers. Additional duties may include: inventory management, troubleshooting, and customer service interactions.
Accurate patient identification and meticulous specimen handling are crucial to this role. Responsibilities may vary based on the operational needs of the laboratory site/division/community in which the MLA is employed. The MLA may be required to work rotating shifts, weekends, and/or holidays, and may also work off-site, including long-term care facilities or private homes as necessary. Interaction with various stakeholders and clients is also expected. Incumbents must comply with all relevant NSH/PLM policies and procedures. Strict adherence to safety and infection prevention protocols is mandatory. MLAs must be capable of working independently, exercising sound judgment, maintaining a professional appearance (in accordance with dress code policy), and demonstrating exceptional customer service.

- Recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant Program or equivalent (as determined by employer)
- Candidates must have successfully completed the Medical Laboratory Assistant examinations of the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) and hold current registration with CSMLS (Where there are no applicants who meet the above qualification, consideration may be given to applicants who agree and commit to completing an accredited MLA program and achieving certification with CSMLS within one year of hire date)
- Willingness to travel to local indigenous communities
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Basic understanding of medical terminology.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Manual dexterity to handle sharp instruments and small objects.
- Ability to perform procedures with a high degree of accuracy.
- Competence in accurately numbering/labeling specimens and filing slides/requisitions.
- Adaptability to updates/changes in operating procedures.
- Basic computer skills; Meditech experience is preferred.
- Access to reliable transportation as travel may be required.
- Proficiency in additional languages is an asset, with French preferred.
