Job Summary

The Donor Care Officer is responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of blood drives and donor centers, focusing on delivering exceptional donor experiences and meeting collection targets.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Manage cost per unit for whole blood and specialized collections, determining and packing consumables as per targets.
  2. Maintain and validate equipment to ensure timely repairs.
  3. Report consumable usage and discrepancies in stock deliveries to the Clinic Supervisor.
  4. Manage stakeholder relations at blood drives and donor centers.
  5. Welcome donors, guide them to registration, and assist with completing forms.
  6. Ensure donors read pamphlets and posters before medical assessment.
  7. Address and report complaints to the in-charge.
  8. Collect whole blood and apheresis units to meet assigned targets.
  9. Assist with setting up blood drives and packing/unloading vehicles efficiently.
  10. Complete donor documentation and assessment procedures according to SOP.
  11. Assist with donor registration and recruitment.
  12. Conduct basic physical checks, capture information, and report deviations to the in-charge.
  13. Document results and inform the Clinic Supervisor of irregularities.
  14. Conduct confidential assessments and educate donors on high-risk behavior.
  15. Prepare blood packs and carry out phlebotomy according to SOP.
  16. Care for donors during donation, providing refreshments and education.
  17. Initiate treatment in emergencies and complete post-donation documentation.
  18. Provide post-donation care and advice.
  19. Perform Clinic Supervisor duties as required.
  20. Maintain regular communication with staff and attend monthly meetings.
  21. Assist with analyzing training needs and managing staff competency.
  22. Maintain staff and equipment files and oversee policy application.
  23. Manage medical waste and ensure a safe environment.
Requirements
  • Diploma/Degree in General Nursing Sciences.
  • Code B or EB Manual driver's license.
Experience and Knowledge
  • 2 years Registered Professional Nursing experience.
Other Requirements
  • Relevant SANBS policies and Procedures.
  • Standards of Practice for Blood transfusion in SA.
