Reporting to the Air Attack Supervisor, the Certified Air Attack Operations Officer operates within established guidelines and policies, delivering specialized expertise and technical support for the direction, coordination, and management of air attack operations. This role is crucial in maintaining aviation and operational support functions.
Role Significance
Aerial wildland fire management is a key strategy employed by the Government of Northwest Territories for wildfire suppression. The oversight and management of air operations by the Certified Air Attack Operations Officer (AAON) are vital for effective aerial wildland fire management and firefighting efforts.
Responsibilities
The AAON is responsible for managing aerial responses to wildland fire incidents where airtankers play a critical role in the suppression strategy. This position requires making informed decisions in field environments without immediate technical support.
The AAON collaborates directly with airtanker crews and regional wildfire operations staff to ensure that airtanker response requirements are met during critical missions. The decisions made in this role can significantly impact the Department's ability to execute a safe and effective wildfire suppression response.
Qualifications
Typically, candidates will possess a Diploma in Environment and Natural Resources Technology or Forest Technology, along with five seasons of ground firefighting experience and three seasons in aerial wildfire management. Current qualifications as a National Certified Air Attack Officer in accordance with national standards, a Communications Canada Radio Operators License, and a valid Canadian Passport are mandatory.
Additional Information
This position is seasonal, typically operating from April to September each year.

Compensation
The salary for this position starts at $44.83 per hour, plus a Northern Allowance of $1.89 per hour.
