Position Summary

This role provides essential support to First Nations communities and the regional mental health and wellness team in executing various strategies and projects associated with the Aboriginal Youth Suicide Prevention Strategy (NAYSPS) and other initiatives that promote the well-being of young individuals at community and sub-regional levels. The position aims to enhance the capacity for Indigenous cultural practices, suicide intervention training, and to advocate for youth wellness across the region through initiatives such as health and wellness campaigns.

Key Responsibilities

1. Serves as a youth engagement partner, collaborating with communities to gather insights and identify current needs related to child and youth initiatives, providing feedback to program leaders.
2. Participates in community meetings and wellness discussions, collecting and conveying information relevant to the themes discussed to program leaders.
3. Establishes new networks for youth engagement within the community.
4. Develops and presents mental health workshops tailored for Indigenous cultural camps.
5. Represents FNHA at conferences and facilitates workshops focused on Indigenous culture and suicide intervention training.
6. Provides coordination and support for the delivery of youth and child programs, collaborating with both internal and external program leaders.
7. As part of the FNHA mental health team, addresses community requests regarding child and youth initiatives, ensuring alignment and avoiding duplication of services.
8. Shares insights on community youth perspectives to enhance training and initiatives related to child and youth programs, potentially co-facilitating program sessions.
9. Engages in community and sub-regional mental health program projects, offering coordination support to ensure project timelines are met.
10. Acts as a liaison for community partners, providing information on resources related to child and youth programs, engagement opportunities, and other relevant matters.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

• Bachelor's Degree in Social Work, Child and Youth Care, or Psychology, along with relevant experience or a comparable combination of education, training, and experience (typically acquired over 1-2 years).

• Experience working with First Nations communities.

• Experience in engaging with children, youth, and families.

Knowledge, Skills & Attributes


• Proficient understanding of First Nations cultural principles and protocols in professional settings.

• Familiarity with BC health systems and services.

• Understanding of community planning concepts and systems-based child and youth care.

• Knowledge of program planning, implementation, management, and evaluation.

• Awareness of risk and protective factors related to suicide.

• Knowledge of effective practices in community-based suicide prevention with a focus on life promotion.

• Understanding of community health program planning and delivery.

The salary range reflects the minimum and maximum annual compensation based on full-time equivalent hours. New hires are typically positioned between the minimum and midpoint of the range based on their qualifications and experience relative to the role's requirements. The upper tier of the pay range is reserved for individuals who demonstrate exceptional expertise and competencies necessary for superior performance in all job responsibilities.
