Position Overview

Join Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) as a Molecular Pathology Scientist

In this pivotal role within the Division of Anatomical Pathology, you will report directly to the Medical Director of the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory. Your primary responsibility will be to perform sophisticated molecular analyses that support the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment decisions for a variety of diseases, particularly cancer. You will oversee all molecular diagnostic tests in the laboratory, which includes the development and validation of new testing methods, as well as the monitoring of current assay protocols. This position requires close collaboration with pathologists, laboratory personnel, and clinical teams to deliver comprehensive molecular pathology services, while also contributing to laboratory accreditation through active participation in quality assurance initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Execute and interpret intricate molecular tests, emphasizing genomic methodologies. Assess and analyze molecular data to detect genetic mutations, alterations, and biomarkers critical for patient diagnosis and management. Review and interpret results from molecular assays, reporting findings to the Medical Director. Supervise all molecular diagnostic procedures within the laboratory. Innovate and validate new assays, oversee existing protocols, and ensure compliance with laboratory accreditation standards. Engage in quality assurance programs to uphold diagnostic accuracy and reliability. Collaborate on translational research projects to incorporate molecular insights into clinical practice. Work with researchers on molecular pathology studies and contribute to scientific publications and presentations. Ensure adherence to laboratory protocols, quality control measures, and regulatory standards. Maintain thorough and precise laboratory documentation. Participate in proficiency testing and external quality assurance initiatives. Collaborate closely with pathologists, oncologists, and other healthcare professionals to discuss molecular findings and their clinical significance. Provide expert consultation on molecular pathology results and assist in the interpretation of complex cases during multidisciplinary team meetings. Mentor and train laboratory personnel, residents, and fellows in molecular pathology techniques. Develop and present educational sessions and seminars on molecular pathology topics. Contribute to departmental research and educational programs, including training for undergraduate and graduate students as well as residents. Represent the Division by engaging in committee work and collaborating on health authority initiatives and research. Participate in administrative tasks to support the operational and strategic objectives of the laboratory. Perform additional related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

A PhD in genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, or a related field is required. Clinical appointment at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (or eligibility for the same) may be applicable. A minimum of three (3) years of recent, relevant experience in a clinical molecular pathology laboratory, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Knowledge & Skills

Extensive knowledge of research methodologies relevant to the development and testing of new clinical applications. Proven experience in developing and implementing molecular assays. Familiarity with high-throughput sequencing technologies and bioinformatics tools is preferred. Demonstrated ability to safely handle biohazardous materials and chemical reagents, with strict adherence to safety protocols. Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities, with proficiency in laboratory information systems and data analysis software. Ability to analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve clinical and research issues efficiently. Advanced computer skills necessary for utilizing various bioinformatics platforms and laboratory information systems. Proven skills in consulting, teaching, and promoting research in both clinical and educational settings. Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities. Capacity to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
