Position Overview:Join Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) as a Genomic Pathology Specialist
In this pivotal role within the Division of Anatomical Pathology, reporting to the Medical Director of the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory, the Genomic Pathology Specialist will engage in sophisticated molecular evaluations to support the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment strategies for a variety of diseases, particularly cancer. This position entails overseeing all molecular diagnostic procedures in the laboratory, including the creation and validation of new testing methods, while ensuring compliance with established protocols. Collaboration with pathologists, laboratory personnel, and clinical teams is essential to deliver thorough molecular pathology services, while also contributing to laboratory accreditation through active participation in quality assurance initiatives. The Genomic Pathology Specialist will formulate relevant protocols, procedures, and policies aimed at quality control and assurance, providing mentorship and direction to technical staff on clinical matters. This role is aligned with VCH's dedication to Indigenous Cultural Safety, Anti-Racism, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, and Planetary Health.
Key Responsibilities:- Conduct and interpret intricate molecular tests, emphasizing genomic methodologies.
- Evaluate and interpret molecular data to detect genetic mutations, alterations, and biomarkers pertinent to patient diagnosis and treatment.
- Assess, review, and interpret molecular assay outcomes, reporting findings to the Medical Director of the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory.
- Oversee all molecular diagnostic tests within the laboratory.
- Design and validate new assays, supervise existing assay protocols, and uphold laboratory accreditation through administrative tasks.
- Engage in laboratory quality assurance programs to ensure high standards of diagnostic precision and dependability.
- Contribute to translational research initiatives to incorporate molecular discoveries into clinical applications.
- Collaborate with researchers on molecular pathology studies and contribute to scientific publications and presentations.
- Ensure adherence to laboratory protocols, quality control standards, and regulatory guidelines.
- Maintain comprehensive and precise laboratory records and documentation.
- Participate in proficiency testing and external quality assurance initiatives.
- Work closely with pathologists, oncologists, and other healthcare professionals to discuss molecular findings and their clinical significance.
- Provide expert consultation on molecular pathology results and assist in the interpretation of complex cases. Participate in multidisciplinary team discussions.
- Mentor and educate laboratory staff, residents, and fellows in molecular pathology techniques and principles.
- Develop and present educational sessions and seminars on molecular pathology topics.
- Participate in departmental research and educational programs, including training for undergraduate and graduate students as well as residents.
- Represent the Division through committee involvement, collaboration in health authority initiatives, and research activities.
- Engage in administrative tasks to support the operational and strategic objectives of the laboratory.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education & Experience
- PhD in genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, or a related field is required.
- Clinical appointment at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (or eligibility for the same) may be applicable.
- Three (3) years of recent, relevant experience in a clinical molecular pathology laboratory, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- In-depth knowledge of research methodologies related to the development and testing of new techniques for clinical application.
- Proven experience in developing and implementing molecular assays.
- Experience with high-throughput sequencing technologies and bioinformatics tools is preferred.
- Proficient in the safe handling of biohazardous materials and chemical reagents, with strict adherence to safety protocols.
- Demonstrated technical expertise and scientific judgment.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. Proficiency in laboratory information systems and data analysis software.
- Ability to analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve clinical/research issues efficiently and resourcefully.
- Advanced computer skills to utilize various bioinformatics platforms and laboratory information systems, along with routine laboratory software including word processing and spreadsheets.
- Demonstrated skill in techniques/procedures necessary for molecular biology in a complex laboratory environment.
- Ability to consult, teach, and promote research in clinical and continuing education settings.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
