On-Call Residential Counselor: Job Overview

I. POSITION SUMMARY

The On-Call Residential Counselor plays a vital role in providing essential support to individuals coping with the challenges of brain injury. Collaborating closely with patients, their families, and a multidisciplinary team, this position ensures that residents receive comprehensive care in a supportive residential environment. The counselor is tasked with facilitating the coordination of services tailored to each resident's unique needs while delivering professional treatment and guidance.

Responsibilities include offering a variety of residential counseling services, skills training, and tracking residents' progress in their treatment plans. The counselor also engages in peer leadership, fostering a nurturing atmosphere that promotes independence and behavioral management, all while adhering to the principles of Patient and Family Centred Care (PFCC).

II. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  1. A diploma or Bachelor's Degree in social work, psychology, counseling, or related human services fields.
  2. Experience working with individuals affected by brain injury is advantageous, along with a minimum of two years in mental health or social services.

III. REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES

  2. Effective verbal and written communication skills across various audiences, including team members and management.
  3. Ability to thrive in a collaborative team setting.
  4. Proficient computer skills and typing ability.
  5. Capability to provide visual and auditory supervision of residents.
  6. Maintains professional boundaries and confidentiality at all times.
  7. Demonstrates leadership and organizational skills in group settings.
  8. Reliability in attendance and punctuality for scheduled shifts and meetings.
  9. Competence in monitoring safety and managing group dynamics, especially in challenging situations.
  10. Exhibits tact, discretion, and sound judgment in interactions.
  11. Remains calm and emotionally present when working with individuals experiencing brain injury.
  12. Willingness to accept feedback and supervision for professional growth.

IV. OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  1. Standard First Aid/CPR certification is required within the first six months of employment, with ongoing maintenance of certification.
  2. Successful completion of a criminal background check is mandatory.
  3. A valid driver's license and personal auto liability insurance are required for driving agency vehicles.

V. SUPERVISION RECEIVED

This position operates under the direct supervision of the Program Manager.

VI. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Creates a safe and nurturing environment for residents with brain injuries, ensuring close supervision.
  2. Utilizes appropriate behavior management techniques with residents.
  3. Employs effective relationship-building and counseling skills.
  4. Responsible for health and safety protocols.
  5. Collaborates effectively with team members.
  6. Completes all required documentation and reports in a timely manner, adhering to program policies.
  7. Engages in regular meetings with the Program Manager for supervision and support.
  8. Performs additional duties as assigned by the Program Manager.

VII. WORKING CONDITIONS

  1. The role involves working with residents who may exhibit behavioral challenges due to brain injuries.
  2. Potential exposure to communicable diseases is present.
  3. Flexibility in working hours is required, including evenings, overnights, and weekends.
