About the Role

We are seeking a skilled and compassionate individual to fill the position of Mental Health & Addictions Counsellor. As a member of our team, you will play a vital role in providing face-to-face counselling and support to community members, families, and groups within the Fort McKay community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide addictions, life skills, and trauma counselling to at-risk populations.
  • Perform psychosocial interventions using various treatment modalities, including individual, family, and group therapy, to support children and adolescents experiencing mental health difficulties.
  • Conduct intakes, assessments, and develop treatment plans with clients.
  • Monitor and document client progress, making adjustments to treatment plans as needed.
  • Offer pre-care and aftercare services for clients undergoing residential treatment.
  • Develop and implement safety plans for high-risk clients and provide emergency services as necessary.
  • Assess client readiness for change and identify strengths.
  • Collaborate with other professionals to discuss therapy or treatment and develop new resources or techniques.
  • Provide one-on-one counselling and lead groups focused on sober living, relapse prevention, living skills, and other supportive measures.
  • Work with the Mental Health and Addictions team to offer services and supports for clients.
  • Develop and implement programming and support for community members residing in the sober living facility.
  • Support elders in addressing the cultural and spiritual needs of clients and promoting cultural activities that foster sobriety and overall wellness.
  • Establish relationships with services in the Wood Buffalo region to assist clients with additional services.
  • Maintain consistent communication with the Manager of Addictions and Mental Health.
  • Provide statistical data to the Manager monthly.
  • Maintain accurate and professional records and files.
Key Requirements
  • A Master's degree in Psychology, Addictions, Health Promotion, Social Work, or a related field is preferred, but a Bachelor's degree is required.
  • Active registration with the applicable regulatory college or professional association is necessary.
  • At least 5 years of experience working with at-risk groups and supporting healthy living and life skills is required.
  • 5 years of experience in addictions services and counselling is necessary.
  • Experience working with clients who have trauma and underlying mental health diagnoses is essential.
  • Familiarity with the DSM-5 is an asset.
  • Standard First Aid and WHIMIS certification is required.
  • A valid Class 5 driver's license and willingness to drive a company vehicle are necessary.
  • A Clean Drivers Abstract and a clear Criminal Record check with Vulnerable Sector are required.
  • Ability to speak Cree or Dene is a definite asset.
  • Experience working in an Indigenous community, including knowledge of First Nations culture, traditions, and values, is considered an asset.
