Role Overview:
The Legal Review Specialist is accountable for managing all legal matters on behalf of clients and serves as the primary attorney for each case. This role includes overseeing and guiding law students engaged in the clinic, while also providing continuous educational support on issues related to poverty law, courtroom procedures, and case management. The incumbent will represent the Director and other Legal Review Specialists during brief absences.
Key Responsibilities:
- Legal Representation: Act on behalf of the Community Legal Clinic and external clients in court appearances and administrative hearings related to assigned cases. Prepare legal documents and represent clients in various proceedings as necessary. Clarify legal rights, responsibilities, and benefits to clients; formulate arguments, including both oral and written submissions, and conduct trials or hearings as required. Ensure that all casework performed by law students adheres to established legal standards.
- Supervision and Mentorship: Oversee law students in compliance with the professional standards set by the Law Society of Ontario. Provide training and mentorship on essential legal practices and research. Assign tasks to students, monitor their progress, and offer constructive feedback. Educate students on the relevant areas of law practiced within the clinic.
- Recruitment: Engage in the recruitment, selection, and interviewing of students for summer positions. Select students for enrollment in clinic courses.
- Instruction: Develop and deliver legal aid courses each academic year, with a maximum of one course per term in the undergraduate program (JD) at the Faculty of Law, contributing to the academic offerings of the Common Law Section and the Community Legal Clinic.
- Innovation and Collaboration: Create and implement innovative pedagogical strategies for supervising and advising law students. Build partnerships with local legal clinics to enhance opportunities for law students. Generate creative solutions for providing accessible services to community clients.
- Stay informed on legislative changes affecting the Community Legal Clinic and its clientele, and provide legal guidance on operational, compliance, and policy matters.
Qualifications:
- J.D. or LL.B. and a member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
- Minimum of 1 year of experience as a practicing attorney, preferably in poverty law or a clinical legal environment
- Bilingual proficiency in French and English (both spoken and written)
- Experience working with law students and diverse populations
- Demonstrated teaching experience at the university level
- Knowledge of clinical legal education and client-centered legal practices
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Ability to exercise sound professional judgment
- Capacity to prioritize and manage multiple tasks efficiently
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to handle sensitive matters with discretion
- Ability to produce high-quality work under pressure and meet deadlines
- Quick learner with adaptability to new challenges
