Job Summary

The Medical Director of Indigenous Health is a key leadership position that plays a crucial role in ensuring the delivery of high-quality services to Indigenous communities. As a co-leader, this position shares responsibility with the respective Co-Leader to drive continuous quality improvement of service delivery.

Main Responsibilities
  1. Leadership and Governance: Co-lead and oversee activities to ensure efficient, effective, and integrated service delivery across Island Health sites. Collaborate with Departmental Medical Leaders to address matters of physician governance, including professional medical practice issues.
  2. Operations and Quality Management: Establish processes and structures to engage physicians and staff in continuous quality improvement of service delivery. Monitor program budget and performance jointly with the Co-Leader, and make course corrections when necessary. Ensure timely investigation and resolution of program-related Patient Safety Learning System and Patient Care Quality Office events.
  3. Change Management and Implementation: Co-develop and implement change management plans to engage and support physicians and staff through change.
  4. Strategic Planning and Resource Allocation: Assess, monitor, and anticipate program resource needs, and work with medical leaders and administrative leaders to prioritize these needs within available resources.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with Island Health Community Medical Directors to advance healthcare initiatives for First Nation communities.
  • Partner with the First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) on collaborative initiatives in healthcare for First Nation communities.
  • Represent the Indigenous health portfolio at the Health Authorities Management Advisory Committee (HAMAC).
  • Collaborate with Medical and Academic Affairs to advance initiatives pertaining to the Island Health medical staff.
