The Laboratory Operations Assistant at BCCDC is responsible for executing various laboratory tasks and administrative duties, including the processing of specimens, preparation for analysis, and clerical support.

Key Responsibilities:

Manage incoming specimens and requisitions, ensuring all information such as personal health numbers, names, dates of birth, and required tests are accurate and complete. Assign laboratory identifiers and organize specimens into batches for testing. Communicate with clients to rectify any missing information. Prepare specimens for analysis by performing tasks such as slide staining, concentration procedures, selecting suitable primary culture media, inoculating various media, and incubating according to established protocols. Create culture media and stock solutions by weighing and dissolving dehydrated media and chemicals, measuring pH levels, dispensing media, and sterilizing through filtration or autoclaving. Oversee inventory levels and equipment, conduct stock assessments, consult with users to identify needs, prepare order requests for approval, and maintain stock control documentation. Collaborate with supervisors regarding inventory issues. Receive and verify orders, ensure invoice accuracy, organize storage, and check the proper storage and expiration of media, chemicals, and reagents. Communicate with suppliers to resolve any discrepancies.

Qualifications:

Completion of Grade 12 education. Successful completion of an accredited Laboratory Assistant training program. At least one year of relevant experience or a combination of education, training, and experience.

Skills and Abilities:

Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to interact effectively with others. Excellent organizational skills. Proficient in data entry and familiar with word processing and email applications. Typing speed of at least 25 words per minute. Capacity to work independently as well as collaboratively. Competence in operating related laboratory equipment. Physical capability to perform the duties associated with this role.
